Northern Flicker by Ginny Salus

July 2021 - Northern Flicker

About the Image(s)

Canon EOS 77D, 400 zoom. Taken in March in a friend's backyard feeding area in Arizona.

I would like to get rid of the shadow on his head but I don't know how!

I like the Flicker as is. If you want to lighten the head take a very soft brush with very low flow and starting from the back of the head brush the shadow with either the shadow or exposure selected. Slow and small increments so it blends well. It will always be a little darker though. A Radial filter very soft could also be used. Post your edited image so we can see how it turned out   Posted: 07/03/2021 19:23:09

Well done. You might have exposed some noise in the lightened area of the head that could be removed with the same mask you used. Your technique looks good to me though   Posted: 07/09/2021 09:54:12

Hi Ginny, Great capture despite the challenging lighting conditions. The oof background really compliments the flicker nicely. As suggested by others it is just a matter of dodging the shadows with a soft brush, you can remove noise later. Your finished image is better but the shadow under the bill has become somewhat more pronounced. Be careful of the over-bright wood which is distracting.   Posted: 07/21/2021 05:36:44
