About the Image(s)

Eastern State penitentiary known for its grand architecture and strict discipline, this was the world's first true “penitentiary,” a prison designed to inspire penitence, or true regret, in the hearts of prisoners.
I visited this place in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania last 2 weeks. I found one room I could step in and did a light painting for creating little haunting effects. Light painting on daytime is more difficult but the room is dark so I could do it. I took at f22, @15secs, ISO 50, focal length 17mm by Sony A7Riii. Tool I used for light painting is a fiber optic flex tube with a tactical flashlight in strobe mode. On postprocessing, I used Adaptive Wide Angle, Camera raw to enhance color and sharpness.

Hi Quang, your photo certainly depicts the Easter State Prison as it is now. I have been inside on several occasions since they opened it to the public. I also lived across the street from the prison when I was about 9 and we could go into the front gate and look at things the prisoners made and could sell. They also made Pennsylvania License Plates for the state. One of my uncles was an inmate for several years. He was the boxing champion of the prison during his time. He would never visit the prison after it opened to the public. It was a very cruel and dangerous place according to people who I knew who were inmates. The guards "screws" as the inmates called them were not people to mess with for any reason.   Posted: 09/09/2021 14:08:27

Quang, this image has impact. The light painting provides positive emotional counterpoint to this somber, depressing chamber. The detail and texture you captured adds to the story so graphically. Thank you for the work you put into creating and skillfully processing this incredible image.   Posted: 09/11/2021 21:53:11

Quang, what a creative way to express things. To me it's like having a ghost of the past present in the cell. I love the detail you captured on the walls and the claustrophobic feeling it emits. Also the colors of gray to green is well captured. Great idea. Well done!   Posted: 09/19/2021 16:10:14
