About the Image(s)

This is an image of a Tall Ship taken on Lake Erie before the pandemic. As you can see in the original, this ship was well-traveled, grimy, and far from pristine. I added a new flag, cleaned-up the grit and dirt on the hull, intensified the whites & highlights and slightly over saturated the sky to a touch of fantasy. Camera data: Nikon D750, 90 mm, f/16, 1/320, ISO = 100.

What a wonderful ship with its sharp lines and billowing sails. Your touch ups worked well, and the flag looks realistic. The image really captures the majesty of these vessels. As I viewed the photo something seemed askew as if the ship was heading downhill. On closer inspection I think you just need to straighten the horizon to fix the issue. Thanks!   Posted: 06/03/2021 15:31:19

Rich, thanks, your keen eye detected the problem with the horizon. Not a biggie, but it should have been straightened. I think my obsession with cleaning up the hull etc., distracted me from the "big picture"   Posted: 06/04/2021 11:07:07

Charles, very bright and fine photo of a sailing ship. Cleaning up the sails put just the amount of color contrast with the water and sky. I noticed after Rich's comment that the horizon was a little off but easily corrected. This is the type of picture you might hang over your fireplace.
Very nice colors, clean shot of the ship. Thanks for the opportunity to review your photo.

Thanks for the supportive observations. These ships are so impressive when they appear on the horizon and even more so when they pass closely silently with such power and grace.   Posted: 06/13/2021 21:38:26

Charles, very much good details of a tall ship, with speed 1/320 you were handling to avoid camera shaking very well when taking this photo. In my view, I would like to zoom out as original image to have more broad view, I would like to have same brightness of background and just increase brightness of the sails but not too white. The post processing may loose the shadow of the boat on the front and back end. Anyway, it is a nice blending color of entire picture between white and blue. I agreed with others about excessive cleanup and tilt off the horizontal line. Thank you for showing the image, I never seen a ship that has many sails on it.   Posted: 06/07/2021 10:07:45

Charles, a nice tack sharp image. You could have fooled me with the flag if you hadn't noted the addition. To my eye you have done an excellent job with the colors of the sky and the sea.

Also it looks like the reformed group is once again getting some outstanding images. Glad to see DD88 doing this kind of work. Take care and feel free to visit me in DD4   Posted: 06/07/2021 19:10:00

A very nice image and sharp. I feel you have to much sky, it dominates about 85% of your image. I ran your image through Topaz Studio 2. put it through DeNoise Ai and Sharpen Ai, then worked on it in Studio 2 using Brightness/Contrast. I cropped some of the top and added a small (3pix) boarder around the image as this is what I got. But I like your image .   Posted: 06/17/2021 13:57:38

I agree with you about the sky. Too much, which in turn, makes the water seem smaller (see Trey's comment).   Posted: 06/25/2021 20:38:35

Great job on this image, you have done a splendid job in cleaning it up, just the right sharpness and that flag replacement is genius! You don't want to over sharpen an image such as this as you want it to be still dreamy and the wisps of clouds add to the mood. Rather than cut sky, I would add some water below as the boat seems cramped to the edge there. Masterfully done!   Posted: 06/25/2021 10:28:42

Trey, thanks for comments and advice. Yes, a different crop would position this grand sailboat better.   Posted: 06/25/2021 20:36:52

This image looks like a painting, I only feel the silence and the sound of water...On the ship, I would suggest to add more details (highlight & shadow).   Posted: 06/26/2021 01:43:26
