Cape Code Foliage by Will Korn

September 2021 - Cape Code Foliage

About the Image(s)

I had a view of some interesting trees on Cape Cod Bay during vacation. The wind seems to sweep their branches and foliage in one direction, giving them an unworldly appearance. I grabbed this one at sunset.

I made the sky colors more vivid in Lightroom.

Tech: 500mm; 1/500sec; ISO-100; F/5.5

Kudos to you for "seeing" this . . . I'm quite sure I would not have. It must have been off in the distance - given the 500mm lens (I'm guessing you were looking for birds!). Really looks like a family - father, mother, child. Complete with torso, arms, heads, etc. Very creative. Making the sky more vivid also works; since the whole image is so abstract and surreal. The jet black silhouette of the trees provides great contrast/sharpness. Well done!   Posted: 09/02/2021 16:38:01

Thank you. I was indeed attracted to the grouping of three and the silhouettes. There wasn't a lot of choice in the composition due to the surrounding area being fairly developed but it worked out.   Posted: 09/18/2021 12:36:49

Very nice composition! I like how the tree on the left seems to be framing and almost protecting the other two trees. The sky looks great, both in detail and color - very nice image!   Posted: 09/02/2021 18:00:00

Thanks! It's like a tree family, isnt it.   Posted: 09/18/2021 12:37:40

Hello Will,
This is quite stunning, especially the way you spotted the arching composition.
You said you enhanced the sky color, and congratulations for not overdoing that, as is often the case. This looks just right, and does not look show-off enhanced.
My only suggestion is to consider cropping out the top 5% because my eye keeps going to the dark streak of clouds in the upper right. Alternatively, you could post-process that streak away. What do you think?   Posted: 09/06/2021 19:01:22

Thanks, that is a good suggestion. I wouldnt crop off the top but can easily get rid of the dark area.

Once I am at it, how about I throw a little bird silhouette on the tree stump at the right?   Posted: 09/18/2021 12:38:50

Will,
I am a big advocate of some images being without focal points, but rather being images of tranquility or calm. Even though you have the evidence of the active wind in this image, I still find it about overall natural calm. Hence, I would not recommend a bird being added. Give it a try, of course, and see how you like it, and you still have a week and a half to show the variation in your group.   Posted: 09/18/2021 15:18:36

When I first saw this, Halloween came to mind, as it is rather eerie, but as I looked at it, the tree on the left looks like there is a nest in the branches, right over the middle tree, and the leaves on the top look like a bird stretching its wings. It is a really neat picture.

Yeah I kept thinking I could see a nest out there.   Posted: 09/18/2021 12:41:12

Will..this is a fine arrangement of shapes and lines, and the light and shadow complete this delightful and warming scene. Well done!!   Posted: 09/14/2021 06:20:05

Thank you for your comment. I haven't had a successful silhouette image before. Chance favors the prepared mind.   Posted: 09/18/2021 12:42:22

Great image! I like silhouette photos (I can't do them very well, but like them a lot). This is a nice, warm image with clear, crisp lines. A nice composition as well. Very nice...well done!   Posted: 09/15/2021 08:44:07

Thank you for your comment. I think the sharpness is at least partially attributable to my excellent new 500mm lens and I used a monopod to steady it.   Posted: 09/18/2021 12:43:26

Will: Very nice work. This could have been a nice, but common photograph, but the silhouette against the colorful sky elevates it to exceptional.   Posted: 09/16/2021 15:15:36

Thanks. All over cape cod seashores there are these trees and shrubs that seem shaped by the wind. Driving out route 6 it is the appearance of these that signals the beginning of a week of summer vacation for me. For a long time I have been trying to capture the feeling of being in such a location and this photo did it for me.   Posted: 09/18/2021 12:45:55
