Fishing at Sunrise by Kieu-Hanh Vu

May 2023 - Fishing at Sunrise

About the Image(s)

This image was taken at VA Beach last summer. I love to walk along the beach early in the morning to watch the sunrise on the horizon. I was quite surprised to find this man fishing so close to the shore instead of going to the pier nearby for deeper water. I am not sure whether he was successful in fishing that day or not, but I think that the presence of human being makes the image more lively.

I like this image a lot! So many leading lines to the sunrise (pier, fishing pole, man's gaze). Warm colors in the sky. The person adds so much interest to the photograph! One suggestion might be to crop it to 16:9 aspect ratio. Half your image is sky - which doesn't add much. By cropping and darkening the left side - I think you further emphasize the fisherman/sunrise and might improve the image.   Posted: 05/07/2023 17:10:27

Thanks, Steven, for your edits. I have thought about a tighter crop but as Jack points out, I'd also want to show the nice gradients of the sky at sunrise.   Posted: 05/17/2023 23:30:35

"Hi Kieu Hanh, thank you for sharing this image. It's a great photo taken with a phone, featuring beautiful colors of the sunrise and captivating lines. The timing of capturing this image is also excellent. I agree with Steven's comment about the image ratio. In my opinion, it would be better to see more view on the right side, which could include the color of the sunshine or a broader space where the fisherman is facing to"

Thanks, Quang, for your comments. I might have other images with the inclusion of the sunrise on the right side.   Posted: 05/17/2023 23:35:40

It's a lovely scene, Kieu Hann. It has elements of a good composition, but on closer examination I'm feeling what Quang says about the fisherman being too close to the right. As to the sky, I think it's fine as it is. Maybe a little off the top, but Steven's version starts to take out some nice color gradients. I probably would have shot this as just a landscape, without the fisherman, but that's just me, he definitely adds an element of interest.   Posted: 05/09/2023 07:48:18

Super nice shot, Kieu-Hanh! Like the others, I would prefer to see more of the scene on the right, where the fisherman is facing. But it is what it is and your desire to quickly capture a sunrise gradient of color worked out well when you found a fisherman by serendipity and captured his presence in silhouette.   Posted: 05/23/2023 12:08:13

Howdy, Kieu-Hanh this is a beautiful, peaceful image. The colors are natural and strong. Great job.   Posted: 05/27/2023 06:46:17
