Approaching Terminal 1 by Steven Jungerwirth

May 2023 - Approaching Terminal 1

About the Image(s)

f you've changed planes at Ohare on United - you probably went through this tunnel with a 4-lane moving walkway. It has a modern/psychedelic design - with LED lit walls/ceiling constantly changing color in an otherwise dim underground passage - lots of metal surfaces that reflect. I always enjoy snapping pictures in this space (sometimes to my wife's displeasure). I took this in April en-route to FL; so many photo ops in this space.

Shot with my iphone, main lens (24mm equiv) and crop/adjusted exposure/saturation in LR mobile.

Your image of the walkway at Chicago airport is beautiful! I still remember that I was so excited to see the lightshow when I transit at O'Hare International airport a few years ago. The colorful and changing lights brought the joy to the travelers.
I like the way you captured the walkway at the center with the symmetric neon lights on both sides. I'd prefer to see the travelers on the right walkway go a bit farer and to see some travelers coming to the left walkway. Nice shot!   Posted: 05/07/2023 20:40:11

You raise a good point about some passengers on the left. I may have avoided taking pictures of people as they approached me (some people don't like that) - also they would block the lit wall on the side. There is a similar wall on the other side - obscured by the passengers. I'll look through my images - perhaps there is a better one.   Posted: 05/09/2023 09:42:31

Airports seem to be full of possibilities like this, but yours takes it up a notch Steven. It's quite the compelling scene with color and lines and shapes!   Posted: 05/09/2023 07:17:53

Hi Steven, thank you for sharing this artistic image. Your imagination and view are clearly evident in the photograph. I believe your main intention was to showcase the reflection of the walkway on the ceiling, highlighting its nice symmetric shapes. Additionally, I appreciate how you were able to capture the ed lines of the decorated ceiling running from front to back. The colors are also impressive, with a seamless blend from foreground to background, and the bright blue area at the end adds a nice touch.

I noticed that the small group of people on the far left, but it is OK, not too much to see. On the other hand, I think the front person on the right is obstructing a significant portion of the symmetric view on the right. In my opinion, it would be better if that person is not from the frame. Overall, I really enjoyed this picture and learned a lot from it. Thanks!   Posted: 05/10/2023 15:22:06

Very Psychedelic !! Love It!!

I like the composition that highlights the light-show and adds a few people for perspective. Anymore, and we have distraction, in my opinion.   Posted: 05/11/2023 11:50:23

We saw this place so many times when living in Chicago and it always is an attraction. I think your shot captured all the exciting colors very well and I agree that it would add nothing to show people facing the camera, not to mention, as you said, they'd only be blocking the best view. Looks A-OK to me! I remember when they extended the subway/el out to the airport that we could see the light display through the walls (I believe were glass blocks)   Posted: 05/23/2023 11:21:53

Steven, this is a interesting image. The lights show is sharp with strong colors. The sharpness adds at lot as does the DOF. Great job.   Posted: 05/26/2023 11:08:09
