About the Image(s)

Before owning an iPhone, I used an iPad mini to shoot some photos. This was taken at the first field of honor set up for Flag Day in June 2013 in our town in Tennessee. ISO32, 33mm, f/2.4, 1/869sec. Although shot at 4:13pm in broad daylight, I decided to try a nighttime effect on this. But first, I used Retouch app to remove some distracting dead limbs and clone grass onto a few bare spots in the foreground. Then, I exported the shot to BeCasso app and used a “Klee” Effect for an intense late night appearance. I would have liked to add in a moon, but I hadn’t shot it on an iPhone or iPad, so I might enhance it later on in Photoshop on my computer.

This is a nice shot, Pat, in fact,I like the original better. I'm attracted to the repeated flags and their shadows, blowing in the breeze, and the Easter egg spring sky. If one could eliminate the second bare tree it would be even stronger.

I see what you're after with the night editing, and that's fine too. I look forward to seeing what the others think.   Posted: 06/11/2022 22:08:28

Happy Flag Day! The results are very interesting. So much of it has a blocky, almost mosaic effect that I like; yet, the flags, while stronger, do not have the same look, not so blocky. The flags are enhanced for color/saturation which, to me, is preferable. With this look, the flag shadows become more like stepping stones to me. The effect takes care of the grass nicely. I understand your attempt to show night lighting, but that doesn't come across for me. If you add a moon, I would remove the skinny tree to take advantage of the nice upper lighting and so it's not too busy. I like the overall lighting, but the lighting on dark clouds makes it look more stormy. I don't think that matters, it's an interesting creation.

I like your creativity. I, too, do not get a night feel. I like the way that most of the image is morphed. However, I agree with Belinda that "eliminating" the sun also eliminates the shadows (which I really like) which become plantings or stepping stones. I prefer the original image.   Posted: 06/14/2022 14:48:32

I'm with Jack on this. I like the original also. You had good lighting and a good subject. I really like the repeating flag patterns and diminishing perspective they form. Some pictures don't need embellishment to be good. The horizon might need a little straightening, but that's very minor. I think this was well seen.   Posted: 06/14/2022 15:19:32

Hi Pat,
Your creativity has transformed dramatucally this scene. It brought out an eerie feeling. The clouds contain the yellow ones, the same as the grass from the middle ground, and the row of flags on the left are much darker than the ones on the right.
You have achieved to turn the daylight scene into the evening scene, but the post processing has created more distraction in this image. Don't be discouraged! Keep your creativity going.   Posted: 06/20/2022 09:13:22
