Shiny Wings by Kieu-Hanh Vu

June 2021 - Shiny Wings

About the Image(s)

As you might already know that the cicadas have emerged again in 15 states of the U.S. This is a unique, natural phenomenon that happens nowhere else on earth besides the eastern half of the U.S. These Brood X cicadas breed and grow in 17-year cycles, and the loud chorus of buzzy screeches is their love song. At first, I was scared to know about their invasion but by reading all the amazing facts about them, I decided to capture their images to commemorate this event.

This image was captured in the morning this week between the fence gaps of my backyard using my iphone. I used Snapseed to enhance the colors and the saturation. I once tried to rotate its face upward but I think that its transparent wings (which look like the white flowers) on the top might look better. Please let me know what you think.

Great job on this macro, Kieu-Hahn, it's sharp, there's lots of detail, and his positioning between the two slats of wood makes for an interesting composition. That eye certainly stands out! Nicely done.   Posted: 06/06/2021 17:53:45

This is an exceptional image; the colors and sharpness are spot on. Did you consider turning the picture 90 degrees?   Posted: 06/08/2021 09:44:42

Thanks everyone for your comments.

Ruth, I captured a lot of images of cicadas in horizontal position, but I think that this vertical one between the small gap of the fence is more dramatic, especially he is showing his shiny, muscled leg like a body builder man.   Posted: 06/10/2021 14:22:54

Such a perfect image! It is crisp sharp and such a great specimen of this buzzy critter. Bizarrely, we haven't had them in our area of Va. but we experienced them in Md. years ago. You captured fantastic details in the red eyes and especially the beauty in the wings. Nice!   Posted: 06/08/2021 09:55:46
