Take It Easy on Route 66 by Don Stouder

August 2022 - Take It Easy on Route 66

About the Image(s)

I took this image on a road trip to Boulder CO. It was taken above the Take It Easy Corner in Winslow AZ made famous by the Eagle’s song. The image itself is from a video frame grab. I adjusted the color and brightness/contrast somewhat. I believe my Mavic was at about 80 ft altitude.

Hi Don. Even before reading your description, this image made me immediately want to start singing... "standing on a corner..." :) (Now it is stuck in my mind for the rest of the day, ha ha!)

I love that you got an iconic corner from a new angle.

It is a great angle. Although the Route 66 sign is a little close to the bottom margin, it still works. There isn't much that I would recommend you do differently. Perhaps darken the edges a bit to make sure the viewer's eye is not kept away from the center. It is ok for their eye to wander around the picture, but you want to make sure they are led back into the center (especially with the bright area on the lower right).   Posted: 08/07/2022 13:40:17

Drema, I am sorry. My reply was directed towards you, not Lisa.   Posted: 08/07/2022 20:41:17

Lisa, taking the video was extremely difficult. I literally could not see the display on my iPhone. I was holding it inside the back of my SUV and had a spotter who was a big help. This is obviously an additional problem with doing photography during the middle of the day.   Posted: 08/07/2022 14:00:15

Hi Don. What a fascinating picture. Is that Route 66? I loved that movie in my teen days. I'm wondering if the bright roof, lower right, might be dimmed down a little? For me, it distracts a little, from the lovely logo on the road. Well done.   Posted: 08/07/2022 14:29:36

Hi Julie,

That is definitely Route 66. Route 66 was also a TV series in the late 50s early 60s I watched. There are many interesting sites along this once heavily travelled highway running from Chicago to Santa Monica, CA. The Interstate highway system built in the 50s bypassed many of the small towns etc along Route 66 turning them into ghost towns, except for the few remaining ones.

I see what you mean about the bright building.
