About the Image(s)

From my Hawaii trip in April 2022… didn’t find a lot of places to fly the drone, or a lot of non-windy days. At the west end of the island, there is a military space force station, and this was near there. So I didn’t fly long, but the beach looked beautiful. There is a little video to see the surf.
Edited the screen grab from the video on the iPhone. I’ll add the flight details later…

Hi Lisa,

This is an excellent image, especially since used a frame grab from a video taken with your iPhone!

The video illustrates just how well the gimbal works on a DJI drone, even on a somewhat windy day. I would be willing to bet your drone was bouncing around a bit, which is not visible in your clip at all.

What was the resolution of the original video?

I believe I would have color corrected the video and sill image a bit. The road appears to have a magenta cast to it.

I love to take photos of coastlines and especially like the curving road of your shot.   Posted: 05/01/2022 19:04:25

Compositionally I would vote for less "stuff" in the image. Maybe flown more to the right and tried to pick of a single person on the beach without all the cars, or alternatively flown left -- up slope -- and found something nice in the mountains?   Posted: 05/01/2022 21:13:16

Hi Lisa, very nice image, I love the composition. I don't mind the stuff in the image however in a photo contest I think Pete's comments would apply. I think the image tells a very nice story. It's too bad that some beautiful locations are difficult to fly your drone.   Posted: 05/02/2022 08:01:33

Hi Lisa! I rather like the composition with the leading line leading the eye right up the center of the photo. I don't even mind the cars parked along the road, although I might clone out those on the sand. I agree that there is a slight magenta color cast that needs to be corrected, and Pete offered some good suggestions on how the composition might have been improved. One suggestion I would make for post processing is to try to improve the sand. It seems a bit overexposed and lacking in detail. Adding a little contrast there might darken it a bit and also bring out the texture. You might want to try adding a slight vignette along the bottom and perhaps on the right side of the photo to draw the eye back in towards the main subject area.

Nice photo, can't add too much to the previous coments. Compositionwise is fine for me, maybe a little more sky in the left top part would be nicer.
If you had the time to take the video, I wonder why you didn't take a shot as well, since editing a still frame from a video results always in loss of details.   Posted: 05/11/2022 09:00:21
