Hrafnabjargafoss by Pete Scifres, PPSA, GPSA

January 2025 - Hrafnabjargafoss

About the Image(s)

This is Hrafnabjargafoss, and of all the many Icelandic waterfall perhaps holds the title for the most unpronounceable. It is located in north Iceland a few miles past (south) of the image I showed last month. Similar to last month it was shot on a very overcast day with the land mostly black basaltic columns and rocks so I just converted to BnW. Not much to this one -- I just maneuvered the drone to what to my eye seemed a reasonable composition and pressed the shutter button. It is the biggest falls in what is a much larger complex of waterfalls. A while back I showed an image of the overall scene.

I had trouble finding my original image but this is pretty much uncropped, and has just some denoise, basic levels, and sharpness adjustments.

I was about 250 feet up.

Love this image, and it looks good in B&W, but it also looks a little crunchy, especially in the upper right and the lower left. It gives a good overall view of the waterfall, which is more difficult to get from ground level (I have wintertime pictures when it was frozen, and it was impossible to get an overall view. I wish I had had a drone then!).

If you do return to do an Iceland trip in the winter, be sure to hit this waterfall. It is difficult to get to, but well worth the effort... especially with your drone! (Plan for a sunrise or sunset shot, because the blue frozen water and white snow against a colorful sky makes for some phenomenal pictures!)   Posted: 01/10/2025 02:47:05

I see what you mean about the crunchy areas, I wonder thought, is that the actual look without being over sharpened? I have a similar image which I thought that I over sharpened but that was not the case, the rocks were just crunchy :)   Posted: 01/10/2025 16:25:37

Ah, I see. And they would certainly feel "crunchy" if you fell on them! :)   Posted: 01/10/2025 23:00:57
