December 2021 - The season for winemakers

About the Image(s)

Autumn is the busy season for winemakers. I had a chance to visit some vineyards and wineries in Washington State. Actually I am not a wine lover and have limited knowledge about wine. During the visit I experienced the wine tastings, vineyard/winery tours... and getting to know that the Washington wine became more and more popular. This video presents what I had learned about Washington wine.

The video was taken with my smart phone and my new Sony a7s iii with Weebill S gimbal. I shot with S-log3 profile on some vineyard footage.

The aspect ratio is 2.35:1 wide screen.

Post editing with Pr, Ae, Au, Ps & Blender.

Peter,
I am a big wine fan. I currently have over 40 bottles of wine here at home. I loved this video.

Nice use of Blender in the beginning. You are so good at that, I tried and had no luck and no patience with it.

At :01 to :42 you had an excellent explanation along with maps of the latitude of the growing regions of the world. You had excellent explanations through-out with great graphics. There was a very nice video image of the grapes in the vineyard at 1:18, well done.

I loved the shots of the grapes being processed. The use of slow motion gave an unique effect to the video.

I believe that the Sony A7S is sonys new mirrorless camera. What do you think of it? I'm a Nikon guy myself and had thought about a Nikon Z9 but that is over $5000 so I decided that my D810 is good enough.

I had never heard of S-log3 profile so I did a little research. More info can be found at :

Very Nicely Done, Peter

Dick,
I used Canon before. I purchased my new Sony a7s III because it was said it's the video first camera. It is mainly designed for videos not photos. So far I only have a 24-70 lens. It is working good. I still need to get used to it.

As for " Log Profile" here is the link for the definition:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Log_profile

It gives a WIDE dynamic and tonal range, allowing more latitude to apply COLOR and style choices. Different brand of camera has its own log profile. Such as s-log for Sony, and n-log for Nikon …
If you shoot with log profile (also called flat footage), you need to find the suitable LUT in your post editing.

LUT stands for "look-up table." A LUT is a tool that lets filmmakers, editors, and colorists save particular color grades as a template. Think of a LUT as a color preset that a filmmaker can readily turn to when working on a project.   Posted: 12/31/2021 02:58:23

Hi Peter,
I'm not only a big wine fan, but I used to live in Washington State in the early days of its wine making. A few months ago I took a wine cruise on the Columbia River and tasted Washington and Oregon wines every day. You did a wonderful job of creating a story. I enjoyed the captivating opening--it was very clever and drew me in immediately. I think you did a great job developing a story, with facts mixed in with interesting clips. Nice job!
