Late Afternoon Tropical Shore by Mike Fernandez

August 2022 - Late Afternoon Tropical Shore

About the Image(s)

This image was taken in the Big Island of Hawaii.
In the color image a bit of saturation and contrast was done.
Converted to Black and White using Faststone software and did use
'curves' to improve the whites.

I still feel the warm breeze.

Hi Mike - A strong seascape image. The deep dark shadows, black rocks/clouds - with contrasting white clouds and surf presents a visual drama of an impending storm, etc. The dark presentation of the left/right borders focuses my attention through the image, following the curving shoreline.

Thanks for such comments. Yes I do love the water and clouds, so I try to preserve those memories.   Posted: 08/14/2022 17:37:22

Hi Mike, a great capture of the storm clouds and swinging leaves of the coconut tree on Hawai beach. The person walking on the beach helps. The bottom part is little too dark for my taste.   Posted: 08/18/2022 20:42:51

Happy Friday, Mike!

Simply ... A very engaging scene! Well balanced and post-production endeavors look splendid! I actually like the dark areas of the foreground; something Ansel Adams did on several of his landscape work ... I do the same on mine when the composition (subject) call for it. I recently noticed on two mini-series on Hulu and Netflix the Director of Photography using a similar tack: that is, not bringing extra light into the shadows; it is often how our eyes see the moment, and in other cases, keeping the shadows solidified helps viewer interpret the scene.   Posted: 08/19/2022 12:54:00

Good morning, Mike. An image full of drama and contrast. The breaking waves, the building clouds, the dark borders- I can feel the heat myself and see the storms rolling in. The drama introduced by the weather is contrasted with the calm attitude of the beachgoer. If you had the chance to wait for them to take another step or two to get some separation from the rocks, it may have helped the composition just a bit but I really like this one.   Posted: 08/21/2022 07:26:58

Jon, you are correct, normally the term for that issue is 'overlapping'. I went back I told the person too move back a few steps and very gracefully, did it!!!!   Posted: 08/23/2022 17:29:01
