Solitude by Jon Porthouse

August 2022 - Solitude

About the Image(s)

On a boat excursion out of Valdez, Alaska to the Columbia Glacier on a foggy, drizzly day we had a relatively close approach to this small island. In a landscape surrounded by massive cliffs and dominated by huge tides, this small island in the middle of the sea seemed perfectly at ease in its isolation.

Technical Details: Captured handheld with a Canon Rebel SL3 and a 70-300 zoom lens at 76 mm. Manual settings at f/8, ISO 800, and a shutter speed of 1/500.

Lightroom Processing: Convert to black and white. Adjustment of tone and presence. Some black and white color mixing.

Hi Jon - An excellent title for a desolate Island in a vast emptiness. Good tonal separation between water, sky; and the Island's shades. Your centering and use of negative space creates a strong, thoughtful image.   Posted: 08/11/2022 09:00:44

A simple image, yet it show so much interest with well defined trees, island, water and a simple sky.
Observing this image, I wonder if a bit of darkening the water at the very lower and darkening the sky at the very top would add more depth. I can easily spend hours looking at this image.
