International Balloon Festival, New Mexico by Debasish Raha

June 2022 - International Balloon Festival, New Mexico

About the Image(s)

The photo was taken more than 10 years ago when I visited New Mexico for the hot air balloon festival. We arrived there before sunrise and it was a really fun day watching the entire process of filling a balloon with hot air and the take off.

The idea of converting the original colorful image to B&W came to mind recently.

Hi Debasish, A creative image and I appreciate your imaginative approach. Although the image shows a multitude of balloons it is strongly anchored by three subjects: the large balloons upper left and lower left - and the stagecoach in upper right. The excellent tonal differences in several balloons provide a balanced contrast to the image. zhope to see more of your designed imaginations.   Posted: 06/08/2022 11:03:04

Hello Tom, thank you for your comments. The original color image was nice and colorful, something that our eyes are quite used to seeing. I think the B&W version is more expressive and artistic.   Posted: 06/11/2022 13:08:33

Hi! I love your capture with the stagecoach ballon. Also like the tones of the image. The stagecoach itself is close to the top edge and makes it a bit top heavy. This would bother me more if the image of it didn't fascinate me so much! Nice work!   Posted: 06/11/2022 08:21:39

Hi Ally, I am glad you liked it and I appreciate your comments. The stagecoach took quite a big space in the photo but I liked its distinctiveness. I think without it the photo would not be that interesting.   Posted: 06/11/2022 13:14:16

Debasish, though the Stagecoach Balloon is prominent near the top (or top-heavy) as Ally suggested, the 1. placement of the balloon (larger) ballon in lower-left balances it to some degree (as Tom eludes to) and 2. the very Stagecoach Prominence in itself makes the scene intriguing.

The B&W rendering is luscious in tonal gamut!   Posted: 06/21/2022 06:46:46

I love the sharpness of the balloons against such clear Arizona sky.
Only one suggestion: I would have added real estate all around, just a few pixels and use content aware using Photoshop to fill, if you have it. The main balloons are too close to the border.   Posted: 06/21/2022 19:08:48

Hi Debasish. Great idea to try this in black and white. I like that the balloons are all very sharp and for the most part do not overlap. Nice side lighting and a very interesting subject.   Posted: 06/25/2022 15:15:05
