Mirror, mirror on the wall, what is the fairest car of them all? by Michel Biedermann

October 2024 - Mirror, mirror on the wall, what is the fairest car of them all?

About the Image(s)

Title: Mirror, mirror on the wall, what is the fairest car of them all?

TECHNICAL: 1/60 @ f/8.0, ISO 160, 39mm (RF24-105mm F4L IS USM)

BACKGROUND: During yesterday's Worldwide Photo Walk in Cocoa Beach, Florida, I came across a Porsche parked by a Gentlemen's club. I liked the reflections off of its spoiler. The owner of the car (and the club?) took pride in me taking pictures of his car.

PROCESSING: Minimal processing in Lightroom Classic. Used Nik Silver Efex to render monochrome and On1 NoNoise to remove noise and sharpen. No generative AI was used. The hardest decision was to keep the color or render in black and white.

Michel, very well done. I would not have known that this is a car (or part of it) had you not mentioned it, but I love the form, shape and abstract fashion of the phot. The only minor thing I would probably do is to straighten the few lines in the top right corner.

Thank you for your kind words Don - Ooops, good catch about the the lines in the top right... I'll correct them right now.   Posted: 10/08/2024 15:45:41

Michel, without your explanation I never would have guessed what I was looking at. Simply an expertly conceived and executed study of line, form and reflection. It is a beautiful composition and well suited in monochrome. I'd be intrigued to see what the color version looks like!

Question for you: When you did decide on monochrome, what did you want this image to be about? If you were to produce the color version, what would that be about - the same or something different from the mono image?   Posted: 10/14/2024 12:38:34

Michael - Here is the color one. Color or B&W? That question deserves to be added (and pinned?) to our discussion forum. My answer(s) is this: I prefer B&W [a] unless the color(s) REALLY adds a unique dimension to the picture (e.g. a sunset) and/or [b] when the color(s) get in the way of the details or the mood of the image (e.g. see the attached color image). Let me give you another example, Lance's awesome moonshine(?) distillery picture fits both [a] and [b]. Colors would get in the way of the details and change the mood of the picture. I hope this makes sense. Thanks for asking the question   Posted: 10/14/2024 14:41:40

Happy I waited to comment later ... after seeing the original (full-crop) color version, I think a slight crop (on the right-side edge), but still keeping the End-plates on the wing, may actually provide for a more contemplative abstraction. What do you think?

As it relates to Michael's question ... a quick refresher on why/how we choose or enjoy color vs B&W, see my new Bulletin Board post! Thank you, everyone!

Yes, it always boils down to what the artist wants to convey. And many times a color image will convey something entirely different from a monochrome one. I like the color version as well and, indeed, it has a totally different feel to it. Well done on both accounts!   Posted: 10/14/2024 15:19:46

Michel,

This is quite dizzying!
The textures seen in the reflection are great.   Posted: 10/18/2024 00:40:41

I really like this composition with the straight lines in the background and the curves in the foreground. Can't decide if I like the color or B&W better but the B&W one would look great as a large wall hanging.   Posted: 10/25/2024 20:37:25
