Trout Lily by Keith Francis

May 2023 - Trout Lily

About the Image(s)

Spring is very slowly coming to my area of Ontario and I was out walking a local woods earlier this week. I noticed that the Trout Lillies are just starting to bloom, and it reminded me of an image I took a few years ago. I came across this Trout Lilly nestled in the roots of a huge tree. I thought it was a wonderful scene of the big and small. I struggled with how to impart the feeling of big and small and also the feeling of protection that the tree may offer the lily. I decided upon the shot below and then I heavily processed the image in Studio 2. I call the look “stylized” as it has been enhanced well beyond what the actual scene looked like. Hopefully it makes the viewer stop and look a bit at the image.
Taken with my Fuji, f/20, ISO = 1000, 1/20 sec with my GF 45-100mm lens. Basic processing in PS and then Studio 2 to get the look I wanted

very nicely processed image, really brings out the contrast, the Trout Lilly really looks like a small baby which the big tree is taking care of and sheltering.   Posted: 05/01/2023 21:06:31

The extra processing gives it a beautiful artistic touch. It magnifies all the beautiful details of flower and bark.   Posted: 05/09/2023 08:13:10

Like the green and brown contrast. Good focus on the lilly and I enjoy the woodland scene.   Posted: 05/09/2023 14:22:46

Your work produced a yummy image. I really like the result. May I suggest burning in or cloning out the bright spot in the upper left corner as it quickly distracts my eye from the subtly toned image.   Posted: 05/09/2023 15:01:39

Excellent observation Andrew - thanks! I've made the change and it looks much better.   Posted: 05/09/2023 18:49:00

What an interesting image! The patterns in the leaves are so unusual, and add a lot.   Posted: 05/10/2023 13:42:30

Another very nice image - nice contrast between the flower and the tree, nicely exposed, and sharp. My only suggestion would be to show a bit more of the tree , to show it's "hugeness", and also emphasize the big/small relationship with the flower.   Posted: 05/18/2023 08:05:13
