Verde Canyon Clarksdale AZ by Gregory Stais

October 2021 - Verde Canyon Clarksdale AZ

About the Image(s)

This shot was taken on 9/28/2021 in Clarksdale, AZ while riding the Verde Canyon Railroad. This is a scenic shot of Verde Canyon which has incredible views - i.e. especially the red rocks in the mountains which are similar to that seen in Sedona.

This image was taken with my Nikon Z7II using my Nikkor Z 24-70 f/2.8 Zoom Lens at 28mm, F/5.6, 1/800th second, and ISO 64. In post processing using Capture One Pro 21, I adjusted the exposure, contrast, saturation, increased the clarity, and dehazed the overall image. I also added an adjustment layer for the sky and clouds to make further adjustments to bring out the colors of the sky and to enhance the clouds. Lastly I cropped the original image to a 16X9 format for a panoramic look.

It's amazing to me that you took this while riding a train! My eyes go right to the red rocks and then enjoyed the whole scene. Beautiful area and you really captured it well.   Posted: 10/07/2021 17:49:21

Laurie, it was indeed a challenge to take photos while riding that train. I was constantly being jostled which made it difficult to focus on any one scene. I took a lot of photos that day, many of which I had to straighten in post-processing. Not to mention I am still on a learning curve with my Nikon Z7II, but I digress!

Nonetheless, this was one my better shots from that day.

What a "statement" of the wide open spaces and beauty of the west. Like Laurie, I was quickly drawn to the red rocks, but the much lighter foreground stopped me first. Of the three horizontals, the foreground seems over large. What if you trimmed it at the bottom and just a tad of a trim of the sky. What I am suggesting is a way to make the three have more equal impact/increase the visibility of the middle layer. Just a thought. From a train! WOW. I can hardly hand-hold on steady ground.   Posted: 10/08/2021 11:10:14

Very beautiful and dramatic image. I keep on looking for the cowboys and their cattle! I think the processing you did really works. I would be very pleased if this was my image.   Posted: 10/08/2021 13:19:30

Well done! I agree with all the above. Your photo makes me want to ride on that train.   Posted: 10/08/2021 13:24:28
