Lonely Street Musician by Keith Francis

July 2021 - Lonely Street Musician

About the Image(s)

This is a shot of a street musician in downtown Kitchener, Ontario. It was a very hot afternoon and COVID was still very active in the city. This musician was playing his heart out but with no one around to appreciate his efforts.

Very little processing was done, just converted to B&W and added a hint of toning. Tried to give it a look of heat and loneliness.

Actual shot: Canon R5 with 24-105mm lens, 56mm focal length, f/8, 1/125 sec, ISO 160

Hey Keith great shot indeed , this image speaks a lot about the situation of how Covid emptied the streets and life of many . Esp people who were earning daily fro streets had nowhere to go. This is a great shot   Posted: 07/02/2021 21:29:35

Yes- I get the feeling your wanted to express. No one is around him and B/W adds to the feeling. Nice job

Not only is there musician there, but his open case with the pictures showing and, I am sure, hoping kind souls will toss in some dollars. This is a great capture, nice. I might think about lightening (dodging) the face just a touch and burning down some of the background. Because the background sidewalk is so bright it keeps pulling my eye there and that is not "the photograph".   Posted: 07/04/2021 19:21:18

Great ideas Andrew and I will definitely play with the thoughts. Thanks!   Posted: 07/06/2021 19:45:25

An excellent shot and I like the choice of monochrome for this image. If it had been possible, I would have taken this shot less "front on", but more at an angle from the left to get separation between the head and the tree. Colour often provides this separation, but with mono this is more difficult to achieve. Still a great image.   Posted: 07/05/2021 23:52:08

Thank you Ruth. You're right, I should have angled this shot; it would have better shown the emptiness of the scene by showing more if the scene.   Posted: 07/06/2021 19:46:59
