Canadian Niagara Falls by Keith Francis

June 2021 - Canadian Niagara Falls

About the Image(s)

This is a section of the Canadian Niagara Falls. I wanted to do something different as the world probably has enough “regular” Niagara Falls images. My goal was to try and visually show the roar of the water. Some brightness adjustment, then Viveza to add structure, then HDR Efex to make it more dramatic, finally back to PS for a bit of Spot Healing.

Would love some feedback on whether this image is over-processed (and any other thoughts / comments). Have I gone too far with it?

Actual shot: Canon R5 with 100-500mm lens, 200mm focal length, f/18, 1/4 sec, ISO 100

I loved this photo right away! It is different and not the regular as you planned. Your goal was a success . I love all the different directions that the water is rushing.   Posted: 06/10/2021 11:48:27

Keith, the painterly flow, the blend of colors and the solid reference rock make this picture just marvelous. Being from a culture that tends to read and look left to right (there is no hope for me crossing a London street!) I wonder if this might work a bit more to my eye flowing from left to right, that is, flip the image. Beyond that wonderment, I really love this image...I mean really love it.   Posted: 06/10/2021 12:05:55

Thanks Andrew! I tried flipping the image and for me, it didn't work as well. However, I suspect that is because I know it's of Niagara Falls so expect the orientation to be as it is. I've attached the flipped version as a FYI.   Posted: 06/10/2021 20:23:06

I agree. It is better as is and not flipped. Nice.   Posted: 06/11/2021 09:04:57
