Henley Beach in Adelaide, Australia by Ruth Benson, QPSA

May 2021 - Henley Beach in Adelaide, Australia

About the Image(s)

The image was taken in February 2021 at Henley Beach in Adelaide, Australia. It was a very warm evening and people flocked to the beaches to enjoy a swim after a hot day. Although the busy cloud display in the sky did not really require any foreground, I chose an image with people in their swimming costumes to serve as indicators of the temperature and time of year.

Raw file, ISO 100, 1/250 sec at f8, focal length 24 mm,
Nikon Z7, Nikkor Z 24-200mm

Some post processing in Lightroom: Sharpening and reduction of highlights.

Hi Ruth, I think having the family in the foreground adds to this image. (Maybe crop out the light pole that is very close to the lady's head.) I love the sky and the reflections in the water.   Posted: 05/07/2021 05:41:36

Hi Ruth
I concur with Julie's comments, and in addition I would warm the image up a bit. It is quite blue and cold looking. In my opinion it is not conductive to swimming.
I would also try and draw out some more detail in the swimmers, by lifting the shadows and lightening them.   Posted: 05/07/2021 22:31:20

Ruth, a lovely image. I am a beach bum (when I can) and see variations of this theme at dusk when walking the beach. While I agree about cropping out the light pole, I am quite at peace with the figures being dark with just enough light so you see the colors but at the same tonal value as the other parts of the picture.. The whole image has a last swim feel to it. Nice.   Posted: 05/08/2021 12:34:00

Love the peaceful feeling of this photo that tells a story. Brave father is in the water but little one with swim floats is still deciding. The sky and colors are gorgeous.   Posted: 05/08/2021 16:35:20
