About the Image(s)

This orchid was at New England Botanical Garden at Tower Hill in Boyleston, MA. This was a hand-held image using a Nikon Z 6II with Nikon Z 105mm macro lens and Nikon R1C1 flash with McCommachie diffusers. The ISO was 800 at 1/125th second and ’/40. The image was initially processed in Lightroom Classic and Then imported to Lumar Neo where the background was removed and various layers applied.
I love the shape and color of orchids. I replaced the background because the enviornemnt behind the orchid was too busy. The small f/stop allows the entire orchid to be in focus (I have not found a problem with diffraction), while the flash freezes any motion from my hand-holding. I find I need to take 3 or 4 images to get the composition I desire. With so many orchids to choose from at the exhibit, hand-holding is more practical than using a tripod and doesn’t get in the way of other visitors .

This is a beautiful photo of a closeup of this orchid. The blue background with its glow effect makes the flower's details pop. I love how a lady with a skirt appears dancing in the middle of the flower. You must have loved going to the Naples Botanical Gardens.   Posted: 03/16/2025 00:09:19

This is a really interesting image. Kathleen, I didn't see the lady dancing until I went back to look after reading your message - but yes, there she is. Harrison, it's wonderful that you were able to get this shot handheld!   Posted: 03/16/2025 15:41:51
