Garlic Scapes by Angela Bonner, PPSA

July 2021 - Garlic Scapes

About the Image(s)

These strange things are called Garlic Scapes and I believe their bulbs are edible though I wouldn't like to try!!
I placed them on a piece of black velvet lit by a soft box right above them. I used my Canon R6, 24-70mm lens at 59mm. 1.6sec at f14. ISO 100. I did focus stack of approx 10 images to make sure they were all sharp even though I used a fairly small aperture. In LR I just dropped the highlights down a tad and then went into PS. In PS I made a white keyline and then spent ages using a black brush to hide all the dust on the velvet!!

Difficult to comment, find te picture a bit to crowdy, I wonder if you take one Garlic flower close up would work better.
Also wonder if staking was really required, using already f14?
A key line to limit the picture is always a goor idea, except believe it is not allowed in projected photo competition   Posted: 07/06/2021 01:52:45

Angela, another lovely shot. First impressions - I wondered if it was too sharp, maybe over sharpened. ?? Or maybe a little too bright in upper garlic scape. Framing is probably perfect, but I felt it was a little left heavy, so I would consider taking a view with a very slight cropping in on the left. I really like the way the light petals have a glow and detail.   Posted: 07/08/2021 07:43:32

Wonderfully sharp and well-lighted image. Maybe tone down the bright spot on the bulb farthest to the right. Great detail!

Very interesting flowers and very interesting set up. I think the purple bulb parts could be toned down a bit. I am wondering how the composition would look with the bottom flower going in the opposite direction?   Posted: 07/09/2021 19:53:39
