About the Image(s)
I’ve purchased this Hippeastrum Picasso bulb a couple of years ago and it flower last December. Taken with Canon 90D with 100m macro lens and hand held. With most of the flower images that I take, I try to make the beauty of the flower stand out from the background. More specifically, I try to enhance its beauty. After adjustments in Adobe Camera Raw, I take into photoshop. There I cut the subject out to separate it from the background and then add a texture or two in the background. From this point, I then “fiddle” with curves to blend the background, use Nik software, especially the tonal contrast and finish with gradient map. Crop and then sharpen.

Hi Nadia. I'm happy that you are In our group. I've never seen Picasso flower before. I like the colored fringe rim of the metals and the green center. It is well exposed and the 2 blossoms in the background are just perfect filling the frame but clearly in the background. I think you did that with this image. Is this the type of background you use often?   Posted: 08/09/2022 17:34:53

Hi Bob, I enjoy photographing flowers and so was delighted when a Flower group was set up. To answer your question, yes, this is about my standard but I'm trying to move forward as after awhile, they have a similar theme. I'm hoping to get inspiration from the group.   Posted: 08/10/2022 04:06:29

Thanks Nadia. My goal is to also get more creative ideas and editing tips from the group and your comments about this image and to Jacob both point to Photoshop edits that I don't well or at all.   Posted: 08/10/2022 08:20:00

Nadia, As with Bob I have never seen a Picasso flower before. Your treatment and presentation nicely compliments the flower. I wonder if the stem really has a bluish cast.   Posted: 08/10/2022 16:26:07

Hi Peter, thank you for your comments. The original doesn't have the bluish cast. Converting to jepg at 72dpi and medium compression has made the image a bit darker than what it is.

Nadia, BTW, you don't have to convert to 72dpi. Just keep the image under 1000k and the server will handle the rest. As referenced in Guidelines for DD. Lightroom export has a checkbox for max size and that's where you enter the 1000k.   Posted: 08/10/2022 19:33:37

Thanks for letting me know Bob. I don't know how to use Lightroom but will use the image size in PS.   Posted: 08/11/2022 04:24:30

Nadia, I only started using Lightroom and Photoshop 2.5 years ago. Many YouTube videos on Lightroom. It uses the same editing engine as ACR but offers powerful image management over other methods. I also used videos and webinars from

Nadia I love your creative interpretation. Like all of us I am here yo get more creative ideas and explore the genre in more depth. The way you blurred/softened the 2 blooms (since they were already soft) really pops your focal point well and you texture overlay is also nice and soft without becoming distracting. I actually do not mind the blue cast it adds depth and interest. Well done   Posted: 08/13/2022 10:17:04

I love how you isolated the main flower and the texture you used to isolate the background. It really adds an interesting background by making it look like canvas. The purple border of the petals works very well at keeping your flower well defined against the background and it works very well with the colors you picked for the background.   Posted: 08/14/2022 23:14:26
