Poppy for Eternal Sleep by Syed Shakhawat Kamal, QPSA

August 2022 - Poppy for Eternal Sleep

About the Image(s)

This image was captured from a tea garden of Sylhet region in Bangladesh in the early days of 2015. I have used a Nikon D7100 camera, with a Tamron 70-300 macro lens in the early morning hours. With an f/5.6 & ISO of 250 without flash to create this image.

The garden was full of poppies. I loved creating this macro capture of the poppy to show the internal setting of the poppy flower. The composition was planned keeping the macro in perspective. The light condition was very soft with a winter chill. The capture was done hand held & without gimbal.

I used Photoshop to crop the image and used some simple light and color adjustment before submission.

I hope you will enjoy the image and kindly give me your feedback on it.

Syed, I just Love the colors in this image. It is well composed, however, the early morning light caused a depth of field & focus issue. What you would want to try is to push up the iso to maybe 640 and thereby increase you f stop to f/8 and even up to f/11 if possible. You did a great job holding the camera steady as witnessed by the center but the small pieces are only somewhat sharp in front. If you are able to get a straight shot down you can get away with a smaller F/stop like 6.3 or 7.1
Keep this in mind an sharp image with noise is better than a blurry image with no noise. The current day software will do a much better job processing for Noise and sharpness. Hopefully you know where to find beautiful flowers like this again.

Hi Bob,
Greetings.
Thank you for your comment. Yes, you are correct about the noise and sharpness issue of this image. I wanted to create it as less noise as possible. But your suggestions about having a sharp image with some noise probably be more appealing to the viewers.
Thanks for your suggestion, I will surely keep them in consideration.
Stay safe & stay blessed as always.
Cheers.
Kamal.

Hi Syed, one of my favourite flowers, poppies, hard to photograph hand held as they bend at the slightest breeze and you did a good job with your image. If your objective in taking an image was to showcase the centre bit, then I agree with Bob, that you might want to consider increasing the f stop to ensure that part is pin sharp as it's the focal point of the image. The colours are very complementary.   Posted: 08/10/2022 05:38:40

Hi Nadia,
Greetings.
Thank you for your comment. You are right the poppies are very agile to the slightest breezes.. It's very hard to capture and I was very lucky to capture these images. I understand your suggestions of Bob and you. Surely I will consider the proposition in my next endeavor.
Thank you and cheers.

Syed L nice crop for the composition. Iloke that the lines of the petals lead the eye to the centre on the diagonal. Also good exposure for capturing the orangey red of the flower. For me the depth of field is not too much of a problem it really comes down to your intent. The out of focus stamens just help bring ny eye back to the in focus parts. My eye keeps moving around the image. Hope this is helpful.   Posted: 08/13/2022 10:31:44

Hi Kathryn,
Greetings.
Thank you for your comment and appreciation. Yes I am happy on the outcome too. But probably they could be better with all of them in proper focus.
Stay safe.
Cheers.
