About the Image(s)

For this month I am submitting a flower I photographed at the Chicago Botanic Garden. The flower itself is very tall and I wanted to capture that in this photo but I feel I lost that in cropping the image. I did crop it because I wanted to limit the color palette of the photo to three colors. Beyond that I altered the vibrance of the image to increase the color of the sky. I captured the image on my iPhone 13 pro. It’s a new phone for me as previously I had an iPhone 6s so I am still getting use to all the new settings and abilities that this camera has.

Jacob. I love the yellow against the blue sky for sure. Also the way the light falls on the centre of the flower is well done on drawing the eye there. I think if you are trying tp portray the height maybe a closer crop would help. I can see why you cropped the stem down to remove the background structure though. Perhaps if you had tried moving around the flower and used portrait orientation it would have allowed more inclusion of the stem. A lovely in-focus image that makes one feel positive.   Posted: 08/07/2022 14:03:28

Jacob, your yellow flower is sharp and detailed throughout. I like the lighting and translucent petals it creates and your creative positioning of the flower with the blue sky background. I wonder if you considered enhancing the flower by removing the 2 or 3 damaged spots on the petals, probably caused by insects? I also wonder if the center of the flower would look brighter if you increased exposure in the shadows? Thank you for your submission.

Hi Jacob, do you do all your editing on your iphone? The reason I'm asking is that you can create 'height' for the flower in photoshop. It's easily done by extending the canvas vertically, copy the blue sky, paste over the empty part of the canvas, add layer mask and blend. The flower does warrant height as it quite large. I do agree with Kathryn about a tighter crop. It's a lovely flower and the yellow against the blue sky is pleasing.   Posted: 08/10/2022 04:37:23

Jacob, You have a nice image of a sunflower. I agree with the other comments, but would like to show some context. In my VF I cropped to a vertical, using context aware cropping; lengthened the stem, and made some small adjustments to color and shadow.   Posted: 08/10/2022 13:51:57

Peter, does your editing add artifacts to other peoples images? Like some hairs from the stem have grown to the right of the stem?   Posted: 08/10/2022 17:02:36

I think this would be a fine image if the center were lit at least as well as the pedals. Also, the pedal covering up part of the center does not add to it. I like the idea of shooting it with the sky as background.   Posted: 08/12/2022 14:08:19

Hi Jacob,
Greetings.
Thank you for showing us the yellow flower. I am sure you have enjoyed the session while shooting. I only have 2 observations. 1) While composing, you may consider to apply rule 0f third and 2) a significant one is the green part from the background made this appear as distraction.
You could adjust your cropping and you may also try and find a flower with a bud accompany the frame.
Thank you for sharing.
Cheers.
