About the Image(s)

I shot this about 15 years ago while doing a sightseeing tour of aa Holland America cruise of Australia and New Zealand. It was fairly early so the surfers were not out in full force but I thought it was a nice shot and reasonable depiction of an early morning beach scene anywhere in the world.

Camera info: Canon Rebel XT Tamron 400 mm 1/500 sec. f/11 ISO 200

This is a nice beach scene. I wonder if it would have benefitted from a crop along the top, which is a bit unclear and distracting. As you say it's an early morning beach scene which could be anywhere in the world and I'm not sure it's street photography, pleasing as it is to look at. I do appreciate though that we may have different views of what is street photography.   Posted: 10/07/2021 07:25:33

I've seen so much discussion as to what is street photography ...is it an individual image, a small group of people, a building you pass while taking a walk, etc.? Certainly we can use the bulletin board if you'd care to start a dialog with the group members. And you are right about cropping the top. Thanks.   Posted: 10/07/2021 08:16:53

I like the cool colors and the soft but direct sunlight. It looks to be a fine day at the beach; a slice of life image. I see two implied diagonal lines that for me give this image some of its energy; the broken line of the breaking waves in the upper right of the image and the line of people crossing the left side of the image. These lines seem to lead to the sun-bather on the far shore. There is also the line of the surf breaking on the shore and the wet sand.

It appears to me that something has been cloned in on the mid-right of the image; I see a discontinuity in the sand colors just to the left of the left most seagull walking on the beach and some repetition of elements in the waves above. I think these should be fixed.

I agree with Mo that the saturated blue band at the top of the image is a bit distracting. As an alternative to cropping you could just desaturate and or darken the blues and cyans in that area of the image. I would also crop out the bit of sunbather at the very bottom of the image and that arm reaching into the image on the far left. I would also darken the sand a bit in the lower left of the image to help contain my eye.   Posted: 10/10/2021 15:39:14
