Early Morning Jog by Mo Connelly

July 2021 - Early Morning Jog

About the Image(s)

Taken a few years ago during a trip along Route 66 ” a never to be forgotten trip. I don’t know why I like this image so much. Perhaps the lone jogger in front of what seems to be a warehouse, perhaps the coca cola paper mug in the gutter, perhaps the colour combination - but it is one of my favourite images. I’m interested to hear others views. As usual very little has been done to the original other than tweaking the colour and a bit of straightening It was taken hand held on a Canon 5D.

You have a very fine scene here. I like the sunlight. It is very like the work of the artist Edward Hopper.   Posted: 07/02/2021 11:32:04

Thank you. Edward Hopper is my favourite painter - when I can travel again I'm planning a trip around the venues of his paintings.

I enjoy the graphic nature of this image, the repetition of the rectangle shape, large and small, throughout the image. I think that the primary colors work well together, bits of red to attract our attention, against the blue wall. Although the large rectangular space behind the runner only has a little yellow in it along the top, it somehow looks yellowish on my monitor, perhaps because it is in contrast to the blue of the building. The red of the runners trunks, the cup in the gutter, and the step around the corner form a nice triangle the leads my eye around the corner where I suppose the runner might go. The large white wall does pull my eye in that direction. I like the position of the runner, heading toward the light. For me, the large space behind the runner balances the light and dark in the image as well as implies motion and time. Well done.

There is very little that I would do to change this image. One subtle change would be to slightly darken the white wall along the edge of the frame if you want to lead the viewer's eye around the corner rather than drifting off the frame.   Posted: 07/08/2021 17:07:32

Thank you for such positive comments - I'll try darkening the white wall.   Posted: 07/09/2021 06:05:48

Great image. The only change I made was to reduce the brightness of that white wall, as that was the first thing that hit my eye.   Posted: 07/12/2021 09:24:10

I agree this is a Hopperesque image. I also agree that the wall on the right should be darkened. Other than that one correctable area, I think you have shared a terrific image.   Posted: 07/17/2021 10:18:52
