Rest Break by Karen Johnson-Nieuwendijk

June 2021 - Rest Break

About the Image(s)

I shot these two at the June Gay Pride Festival in Providence. Someone had pulled the pink couch out and they were taking advantage of it. Sony a6300, ISO 400, 1/20 sec at f5.6. I did some basic adjustments and cropped it.

This is a great street photography image. I just felt it lacked a little bit of contrast, maybe a bit of brightness missing. I duplicated the image layer and then did a non destructive layer mask, brightening the people a bit and toning down most of the brick and cement. What do you think?   Posted: 06/02/2021 09:09:22

I also think this is a great street story.

When I first looked at it, I had the same suggestions as Bev and I think her edits help.   Posted: 06/02/2021 14:45:56

I really liked this as soon as I saw it, it's full of interest. I'm fascinated by the idea of a pink baroque sofa on the edge of a pavement. Particularly with two men who don't really look like baroque sofa types! I enjoy images which make me ask questions, even where there is no answer. I agree too that Bev's edit is an improvement.   Posted: 06/06/2021 08:25:34

I'll join the line of liking this interesting street shot. The couch is really out of place, not just on the street, but in time. Reminds of furniture I saw as a kid in the homes of people my grandparent's age (they were born 140 years ago). I also like Bev's adjustments.   Posted: 06/09/2021 11:06:16

I can feel the tiredness of these two guys on that bright pink couch. What a great find. I think your composition works well. I agree with Bev that a toning down some of the background would help bring the main subjects forward a bit. I would also tone down the light on the pavement some too.
