Driving to Wuhan by Bev Caine

May 2021 - Driving to Wuhan

About the Image(s)

We had been on a Yangtze River cruise and were bussing from Wuhan to our next stop when the bus blew a tire. We were stopped by a field where the workers were doing their thing. While we were waiting for another bus to pick us up to complete the trip these three women came to the bus and began a friendly conversation, with our guide interpreting for us. As we all had cameras, they took turns asking us to take their photos. As this image dates back to the 1980s I have no worthwhile data because it was scanned from film.

This is a nice snapshot for your travel book. For me there is no story to it and it's not interesting.   Posted: 05/03/2021 14:22:54

I can see why this image taken as you were driving to Wuhan might resonate in todays pandemic. The woman in the centre has a lovely face and smile, but its perhaps not a street scene, rather a travel shot.   Posted: 05/04/2021 08:55:52

I have to agree, this doesn't strike me as a street image, but more as a good travel snapshot.   Posted: 05/04/2021 12:50:13

I could probably have shot more of the rice fields but they were so cute running up to be photographed that I took this instead.   Posted: 05/04/2021 14:17:50

I think this image does give us some insight into the character of your subjects, they do want to be photographed, smiling appropriately, and appear to be having fun. Their clothing tell me a little about their personalities, the woman in the center possibly a little more traditionally dressed while the one on the left is dressed in a more modern or western fashion. The clothing does not look to me to be that of field workers, so given the context of the background landscape, perhaps they are tourists from town much as you were.

I think you handled the subject well. The lighting looks soft which is good for photographing faces. I do not see anything that I would change.

For me, the story in an image is not always about some action, but can just as well be an observation, something that you see that interests you. People's character is always interesting to me.   Posted: 05/06/2021 00:11:15

They actually came running from the field where they were working to greet us and be photographed.   Posted: 05/06/2021 05:36:33

It's so much more fun to meet the people of the place you are visiting. When my wife and I travel we always want to meet people and get to know what they are like and what interests them. Nice photo of some smiling locals.   Posted: 05/08/2021 14:41:52

Nice portraits. Not necessarily street photography tho. It looks as tho it may have been a family all working together in the fields-Grandma, Mother, and Daughter.   Posted: 05/11/2021 13:33:01

My thought was that since we were on the side of the road waiting for help in replacing the tire, and they came running up from the fields it might be considered street photography since that is such a broad category.   Posted: 05/11/2021 16:43:07
