Rose with Music by Connie Reinhart

About the Image(s)

My husband gave me these beautiful roses for Valentine’s Day. Wanting to make them (or at least their memory) last, I took several pictures of them. Roses on a piano keyboard is not at all a new conception, but I have still not taken a satisfactory one. This was processed in PS using Topaz studio as a plug-in, each step is on its own layer.

First I used Topaz AI Clear, Precision Contrast, and Precision Detail. The music is from one of my books; copied then distorted to give it those waves. This was added on its own layer, using Blend Mode Multiply, and reducing the opacity. I should have masked it from the rose itself. Lastly a brown vignette added. Black was too strong.

This is a lovely timeless image Connie. You have creatively preserved a wonderful memory. Your tight composition, sharp focus and good lighting all work well here. The music overlay is a very nice addition and what a great idea to warp it.

My only suggestion would be to see how it works if you were to mask the music off of everything except the white keys. It is such a nice element but might be a case of less is more.   Posted: 05/10/2023 07:28:27

I love this image Connie. I also play the piano, and LOVE flowers, so this image really appeals to me.

I also wonder if you removed the musical notes from the brown part of the background and the flower, but kept them on the black and white keys only, So it's like they are flowing from underneath the flower, would that make any improvement?

Nicely done!   Posted: 05/10/2023 10:59:44

Hi Connie,

What a beautiful and creative image! The rose is stunning. I love how its edges are ever so slightly tinted red. The addition of the musical notes definitely adds to the story. Creating the wavy pattern with the notes gives the piece a feeling of musical movement. I agree with the others about removing the notes from the flower and the wooden panel above the keys.

Thank you all for your kind comments. I am no Hazel Meredith when it comes to textures, but I keep trying. How is this version with the music masked from all but the piano keys?   Posted: 05/27/2023 14:44:31

I think the image is stronger without the musical notes showing up on the rose. But now that they are also gone from the wood behind the flower, it makes mw wonder how it would look if those are added back to the wood, but not the flower itself? Like the rose is laying on top of the musical notes flowing behind then under under the flower and across the keys.

Just another thought if you feel like playing with this more.   Posted: 05/29/2023 11:51:25

A lovely image and well thought out. I really like the addition of the music. I think your reworked image with just the music on the keys is a little stronger.   Posted: 05/29/2023 04:43:36

Hi Connie - what a wonderful concept! I like your re-worked image very much, and agree with Denise that it might be fun to play with the notes coming down the wood and seeming to slip under the rose :)   Posted: 05/31/2023 05:27:03
