About the Image(s)

I am really disappointed, but my friend wasn’t enamored of last month’s “Textured Super-Rose” image for her bedroom wall. Instead, she thought she might like “sunflowers and bees”. Since she is a REALLY good friend, I decided to give that a try. This is the result.

I had a couple of photos of this sunflower where the bee was captured in two different positions, so it was easy to mask in a second bee and create the horizontal-cropped, Start Composite.

Then, with the desire to add more interest, I added a “texture” ” in this case an image I had created a couple of years ago. This texture image is a blended, 5-shot, multiple-exposure of a field with sunflowers, as well as additional sunflower bits and pieces applied as needed to places so as to flatten out any overly-bright or overly-dark areas. I then ran the “find edges” filter in PS on a copy of this combined, stamped-up image, and applied the find edges result layer in the darken blend mode. This is sort-of how image 2 was created.

The Start photo and the texture image were combined as layers in PS using the soft light blend mode, with selective masking of the flower center and applying the texture at a higher opacity to the blue areas (again using masking) than the yellow petals. Selectively fiddling with colors and curves, cloning away distractions, and making the bees brighter resulted in this month’s final image. (I plan to post this Sun Flower and Bees Final image against her milk-chocolate-colored wall in the comments below.)

It can be so very difficult to create images for others which meet their expectations so bravo to you for the effort you are putting in on your friends behalf - she should love this. I can really see this beautiful image on a wall and I really like the creativity you bring to both creating and using your textures. The texture in the blue portion of the image really softens the overall effect you have achieved. I might experiment with reducing the opacity of the texture on the sunflower itself but it works just fine as is.   Posted: 07/13/2021 09:29:17

I think this would be lovely on her wall! The colors are bright, the composition is cheerful. I like the addition of the blue as a second major color in this image.

My only hesitation is that sunflower in the texture on the flower in the lower left. I found it quite distracting. To me it just doesn't fit well into the composition. If it were mine, I would mask it out and substitute some other pieces of sunflower from another part of the texture layer.   Posted: 07/02/2021 10:43:45

Well, Witta, I hope your friend likes this one. It truly is lovely. As to the lower left corner sunflower in the texture, I didn't really notice it as outstanding. Perhaps instead of re-creating the texture, you could just rotate the texture layer. The cropping is good, as the subject is the center of the flower, not the whole thing. This allows the petals to frame the center and its visitors. Exposure, DOF, and color are excellent.   Posted: 07/11/2021 10:50:11

The beauty of art is always in the eye of the beholder! You are a really good friend to create another image.
Georgianne has picked up the sunflower that I feel needs adjusting back - so nothing more to add from me. Except, well done - and great experimenting :)   Posted: 07/20/2021 16:42:23

Awesome result Witta. I love the repeating pattern of the sunflower outlines in the texture. I hope your friend appreciates all the work you've done to give her a beautiful piece of art for her home!   Posted: 07/22/2021 21:31:16
