Our Daily Bread by Heidi Egerman

January 2022 - Our Daily Bread

About the Image(s)

I don't stray too far from my light painting technique these days. It is something that works for me, and I never seem to run out of subject matter.
The garden is in a state of recovery with nothing growing to photograph. But, over the holidays I made quite a few loaves of bread as gifts for friend and family. Thus, it was no surprise that this loaf would end up in my studio, sitting in the dark for a bit, waiting for me to start (light) painting.

Well, another strong image. I need to get started but I've never done one. I'm going to go look at a tutorial on the internet.
Bravo, the composition is ideal, the colors well highlighted.
The processing is perfect.
I would have insisted on the right handle which hardly appears and I would have made a test without paper under the bread. But it's just curiosity, the image is beautiful like this.

Thank you Sophie. I hope you do give light painting a try. It is challenging but can be magical.   Posted: 01/26/2022 17:40:54

I love the warm tones of this image Heidi, I can smell the bread. Your use and arrangement of the elements all combine to produce a very appealing mood. The colours and lighting are just right. With every respect to Sophie, to me, the two handles on either side give balance to the image, while the paper, well lit near the camera and not so well lit away from the camera, gives a degree of depth to the image. Warm tones and textures to the timbers provide great effect. Congratulations.   Posted: 01/16/2022 04:52:40

Thank you very much Ian. Unlike some light painting photographers I have a tendency to leave some things in the dark intentionally - adding to the drama.   Posted: 01/26/2022 17:42:26

Oh, what a tease you are. I just want to reach in and have a slice of bread. When I was young my parents (French) use to go to the French bakery once a week and the bread was so yummy and the crust just added another dimension to the taste. Your image flooded me with memories of my childhood. So strong is your image with its shadow and light shaping all the elements in the image. All the various objects in the image contribute to the strength of the image. I like the dark background as the eye of the viewer is centered on the image itself and never wanders outside of the image. Well done, Heidi   Posted: 01/18/2022 20:48:27

Thank you Henriette. Much appreciated.

Great image Heidi. The bread does look delicious from the way you highlighted it with the light. The paper was also a great addition to the composition. You have inspired me to take my first online light painting class. Thanks for showing all these great pictures.   Posted: 01/22/2022 19:50:48

Thank you Jay. I hope you enjoy light painting as much as I do. It can be magical but is very challenging to learn. Takes patience and persistence. The PSA class is good. If you are taking that one, tell Bas hello from me.   Posted: 01/26/2022 17:44:36
