About the Image(s)

These are fall leaves that I picked up on a hike in our local foothills last month. The image was shot on black plexi-glass using my standard ‘light painting’ technique, but with a much shorter exposure. Exposure 5 sec/f11/ISO 400.
Minor edits were done in Adobe Camera Raw. In addition, a few edits in the way of filters were added in Nix Color Efex Pro 4.

Great choice of the subject to use in the photo. Lots of textures, shapes, and sizes. Very creative light painting emphasizes all the beauty the leaves offer.   Posted: 11/20/2021 09:11:24

Heidi, were you an artist in another life? Your ability to choose subjects and light them is just wonderful. You probably could make anything look great with your talents. The light painting on the darker leaves is just right and provides a good support to the golden leaves. The placement of shapes/edges of the golden leaves plus the direction of the leaves (right to left) is perfect.   Posted: 11/20/2021 19:56:14

Again, you are so kind and give such great critiques. My schooling was in fine art, along with a degree in advertising and illustration. I used to make jewelry and paint in watercolor, but I've found photography to be my true love. Maybe it is because I'm retired and finally have the time to explore, experiment and study. My passion for gardening and the outdoor also give me much subject matter and inspiration. Thank you and have a wonderful Thanksgiving.

Thank you Heidi, for this image and also many of your others. Many photographers in a club I belong to down here take photos of "whatever pops up in front of them". Very few think about an image they want to create, and then how they are going to achieve it. As always, your forward thinking and methods have produced an extremely strong image, full of texture, depth and rich colours. Congratulations on a superb image.   Posted: 11/22/2021 01:57:58

To create an image like this from almost nothing, it takes imagination, anticipation, perseverance and patience. A lot of qualities that I don't have.
This image is very accomplished with a beautiful color, a pleasant treatment. Nature is beautiful but this composition goes beyond the simple branch, it offers a light, and paints gold on our souls. Thank you   Posted: 11/23/2021 10:02:24

Thank you Sophie for your kind and thoughtful message. Light painting seems to really bring out the beauty in so many things. I love it when one of my images evokes some kind of emotion. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving.

Excellent study in light! Kudos on the choice of the leaf at far left for the strong standout item in this composition. All well done. My only suggestion would be to photostack two images so the back leaf at top is in focus.   Posted: 11/24/2021 09:07:54
