About the Image(s)

This photograph, “Chalk Art” was taken at the annual Cleveland Museum of Art Chalk Festival. Anyone can chalk on a small section of the grounds designated for the festival. They usually have around 50 people drawing, with many people there to watch. They do invite a few actual artists to participate with the rest of the public. This woman was one of the invited artists. I cropped out the distractions in Lightroom and did a few other adjustments to reduce some of the bright areas. Pentax K-1, f 5.6, ISO 100, 1/1000 sec, 50mm.

Congratulations Jay, for taking a fine image of a local festival. I'm sure there were many other people around for the event, looking at the artists and their work from all angles. Many people will comment on taking photos of other people's artwork, but personally, I can see nothing wrong with it and am all for it. Many objects we find in cities and towns, such as statues, fountains and details on historic buildings all include someone else's art, but we still happily photograph them. Back to your image, it's bright, it's colourful and it definitely tells a great and strong story. Given the surrounding items, the sign, the handbag, the grass and the tray of chalks, that are all part of this story, I feel your cropping them out greatly strengthens this image. The story is all about her artwork on the pavement and that is the vast majority of your image. You have left enough of the artist to complete this story and answer any questions the viewer may have. A great image, very well done indeed.   Posted: 10/17/2021 03:55:20

What an excellent and colorful image! You did well cropping to the action of the image, which allows the contrasts and texture to really come out. I don't have any suggestions on how to improve it. Kudos!   Posted: 10/18/2021 08:46:39

Not always easy to take these kind of images and create something unique but you've done a wonderful job in eliminating the distractions and enhancing the beautiful colors and the person creating the chalk drawing. You have in the image all I need to know...the artist, her creation and the image...well done Jay.   Posted: 10/18/2021 15:21:56
