Explosion of Color in the Floral Landscape by Henriette Brasseur

July 2021 - Explosion of Color in the Floral Landscape

About the Image(s)

This clematis was taken in my backyard with Lensbaby 56 lens that at low apertures gives a soft dreamy look. In Photoshop I added a texture from Flypaper Textures to give a light painterly look. In addition I added a bokeh texture layer with the blend mode set to soft light and the opacity reduced. My intent was to have soft out of focus color circles to add interest to the image. I first added a black edging to the image and that didn’t work, especially with the darker colors at the bottom left of the image so the edging was changed to white. I did lighten those two dark areas on the lower middle to left side but still not happy with that area. Shutter speed 1/200, EV 1 1/3, ISO 100. F stop was somewhere between 1.6 and 2.8.

Another superb image with your Lensbaby Henriette. The softness of the bloom is enhanced by the pastel colours making this a wonderful soft delicate image. Compositionally it is very strong and your use of the texture gives it that little bit extra. The colours would look on any background. This image definitely deserves to be hung in an exhibition.   Posted: 07/07/2021 05:55:41

Soft focus is really "in" these days and you have done well here. You have detail in the middle highlights even when softened. The off-balance center yellow area is well placed. Nicely done!   Posted: 07/07/2021 15:37:23

Henriette,

You definitely got that soft dreamy look you were hoping for. It makes a wonderfully soft ethereal image. It is just my preference, but I generally want a small area that has a bit more focus. Maybe even one or two little spikes from the center of the clematis. The composition and the textures work very well with this image. Well done.   Posted: 07/14/2021 16:57:10

The Lensbaby 56 lens that I used for this image at low apertures makes the image look soft even though the focus was on the yellow detail in the middle. I shall go back to the image in photoshop, go to the mask on the textured layer with a brush and paint out some of the texture at a low opacity on just that one area to see what happens. Thank you for you nice comments. I like getting feedback on different viewpoints as it is very helpful.   Posted: 07/19/2021 17:39:14

Thank you Jay. I have been working hard on becoming more creative in my images these past few years....getting better... it has been a struggle as I am so left-brained. Your comments are very encouraging.   Posted: 07/19/2021 17:44:55
