Joyful Colors in an Intimate Floral Landscape by Henriette Brasseur

June 2021 - Joyful Colors in an Intimate Floral Landscape

About the Image(s)

This image is a Daniel Deronda Clematis that was taken in my backyard with Lensbaby Velvet 56 lens. For those of you that may be unfamiliar with Lensbaby 56, when you shoot at an aperture between 1.6 to 2.8, you get a soft dreamy effect. More than likely I probably shot this at 2.8 because I wanted some sharpness in the upper part of the sepals. This is a composite image. On the day this image was taken, it was particularly windy. One image was taken when the wind stopped temporarily and the second was taken with the idea of just having motion appear and no particular definition to the flower itself. The two images were then combined with the soft motion evident in the upper left part of the image. The image was taken on a tripod with a RRS ballhead with Canon 7D Mark II + Lensbaby Velvet 56 lens.

The effect is successful for me. The background goes well with the flower. I like the fluffy, silky feel of it.
The wind is not always on our side, but the person looking at the picture doesn't know it if he hasn't read the text.
Here, without reading anything, I think of the softness of the oakum my grandmother used to spread rice powder on her face. It's a big hug of sweetness.
I'm sorry for the childhood memories but I didn't know how to describe it. Have a nice day.

Thank you Sophie for your nice comments and observations on the floral image. Childhood memories are wonderful and I love the memories the image evoked from your fond memories of your grandmother.   Posted: 06/06/2021 09:55:41

Lensbabies are a great tool, so is multiple exposures. You have combined both tools here to wonderful effect. Composition and colours are excellent. This image has a whimsical feel to it, while not being over done. Just the right amount of everything. You should be very proud of this one Henriette and don't hesitate in entering it into any competitions.   Posted: 06/06/2021 07:12:39

Sometimes when I take images I follow my heart and not my mind never knowing the outcome. This was the case with this image. I've learned to embrace the wind thinking how can the flow of colorful motion add to the feelings I feel and culminate in a image that reflect those thoughts. Ian, I really appreciate your descriptive thoughts on the floral image and your reasons as to why and for your encouragement on entering this image into competition.   Posted: 06/06/2021 10:19:30

This is so beautiful and ethereal. Clematis are one of my favorite early spring flowers. You've done a wonderful job processing this image. One of these days I'm going to try doing a composite. Well done! I have a Lensbaby Sweet 50 that I don't use much, but this is an inspiration to get it out and play around a bit. Thanks.   Posted: 06/11/2021 14:35:59

A very creative and beautiful image Henriette. I like the color harmony and the uniqueness of the composition. I've never used a Lensbaby lens, but now I am interested in trying one.   Posted: 06/18/2021 10:04:13
