About the Image(s)

This image is from my recent trip to Monument Valley. I went there to do night photography, but it was either very cloudy or, the last 3 days I was there, they had wind storms with gusts to 30k. So, I did a lot of “dust” photography.

This was taken with from the car with the window rolled down briefly. We pulled out of the road but it was just too dusty to get out.

Taken with my Sony a7riii, 24-105 lens at 35mm, f22, 1/250s iso 400. I processed it in ACR adjusting the highlights, shadows, clarity, etc. In PS I further adjusted the contrast .

Very appealing photograph taken in difficult conditions. The result is beautiful .I cannot decide which I resonate most with ,the original or the final product .I like the leading line in the original .I might use masking in Lightroom to alter the brighter areas of the sky a tad in the original. Looking at my submissions I realize that cropping ...just right... is difficult . the sign on the left can easily be removed   Posted: 05/11/2021 09:53:41

Thank you for your comments, Nicole. I was wondering about the cropping. I did the crop because the foreground was shaded by the vehicle and I was't sure if there was enough going on in the foreground to keep it. I appreciate your comments about the leading lines. I also wondered about the sign. I often would remove something like that, but I wondered, because of it darkness, if it provided some balance to the dark bushes on the right. I'd like to hear what other people think. Again, thank you for your comments.   Posted: 05/11/2021 12:00:51

I think this is a great subject and the dust storm certainly adds an interesting dimension. Personally, I like the dirt road in the original image and agree with that it makes a great leading line and I like how it disappears into the dust cloud. I agree the sign should be removed.

I see in your comment to Frank you ended up removing the sign, can yiou post your edit so we can see the results?   Posted: 05/17/2021 20:42:41

This is a really nice shot, with great colors. It's too bad about the gravel in the foreground of the original, else you could have cropped it less, leaving the dusty road to tell more of a story. I agree with Nicole, the sign is distracting. But beautiful regardless.   Posted: 05/16/2021 18:14:23

Thank you. I just removed the sign from my original and I agree with you and Nicole after sitting with it for awhile. I also agree about the gravel. I wasn't driving so didn't have a choice in my placement.   Posted: 05/16/2021 19:10:07

Here ya go with the sign removal. I don't have time right now to make one with the foreground put back in. I'm running around as I fly out tomorrow am for my high school reunion. I'll try to do it when I return.

I definitely think removing the sign was a good choice.   Posted: 05/18/2021 06:56:07

You have caught so much atmosphere with this image Janice, I love it. The great layers through the scene, colour pallet is moody yet inviting. Like the others I think removing the sign has improved the image and I do like the leading line of the road. Great capture   Posted: 05/17/2021 22:17:49
