About the Image(s)

White lion cub, Ngala game reserve 2019 (South Africa). I wanted to isolate the white cub and amplify its stare into the lens, but at the same time faintly show one of the normal colored lions in top right, to show differences in color.

To try and isolate, I cropped and (using Gimp) applied 'focus blur' and added a vignette. The vignette (and blur) was to help camouflage another lion 'healed' from the photo (see original) and to help the subject stand out from the grass. I also put subject in center because no room after cropping to do anything but place its eyes on top 3rd (use rule of 3rd).

Using Fuji Xt-3 (APS-C) with 100-400, as low as possible from jeep. Hand held.

Because the white cub is so striking it does not bother me to see the whole picture .He is sharp ,you zoomed in on his eyes (I would not like to be too close to such an intense animal) and the texture of the fur just right.Did you post crop...the texture of the grasses looks different? I looks like you had a great trip   Posted: 05/11/2021 10:06:28

Yes, the grass is a problem. There are so many problems with it, pre and post crop (for what I was trying to do).   Posted: 05/16/2021 18:34:43

Cute kitty! Very nice capture of the expression on the cubs face. For my taste, the blur and vignette is a bit heavy. I did a different crop on your original and applied a light blur.   Posted: 05/12/2021 13:32:03

I like it ...the blurred grass in front of the lioness bothers me and I wonder how that area would look cloned out   Posted: 05/12/2021 18:34:51

This was done quickly. One could certainly fine tune the mask.   Posted: 05/12/2021 19:59:29

Agree the blur and vignette is a bit overkill especially over the lioness. I like your crop also. Unfortunately the 2 white cubs didn't cooperate during posing.   Posted: 05/16/2021 18:28:43

I agree that with your point of focus being on the white cub, the cubs in the background do not necessarily needed to be removed or blurred. I think the cubs in the background help show the familial relationship and add to the image, not detract.

I made a similar crop as Janice did but in a square format to keep from cropping the head off the back cub. I did not think any additional blur was needed. What do you think?   Posted: 05/17/2021 21:02:10

I like your crop as well. With that look on the white cubs face, he commands the attention and the other lions just give him context.   Posted: 05/17/2021 21:22:27

Im not a fan of your edit, the blur and the vignette distract from the white cub. You have caught a great expression on his face and I feel retaining the three trailing lions adds to the story and provides a much stronger image. The white cub remains the hero of the shot. I prefer Janice's crop as it gives more room for the loins to look wild and free   Posted: 05/17/2021 22:29:28
