Pier at Sunset by Jeff Hanke

About the Image(s)

After I joined the group, I went down to a local pier as it was quite windy and waves were kicking up. I took shots from different angles at different stages of sunset. I decided to merge two shots, one with the birds flying over and one with the sun casting a shadow under the pier. I started by adjusting levels of the sunset shot, and then copied in the birds and blended them into the pic. Next I selected a sky replacement to add some dimension to the sky which was too flat. I used a mild Nik silver intensifier to help the pic pop. Lastly I saved as JPG in smaller format.

The first attachment is the finished BW, the second 2 are the shots I worked from.

A local PSA member friend of mine helped me with aspects of Adobe and NIK for this.

Anyway, I hope this is the sort of think you're looking for, and I’m within the boundaries for submission. I have other BW shots from further back, but this is what I could get done for a new pic in this timeframe. I look forward to exchanges with the group.

Welcome to our group, Jeff! You have done a good job with the merging of pictures. The birds give life to the image and the clouds add drama. My suggestions for improvement is to crop the foreground so the horizon line become down to about 1/3 and darken the blue sky slightly to increase the tonal range.   Posted: 01/09/2022 02:15:02

Nicely merged and edited image. I did like the colors of the sun and sky in the color version, but the B&W as you edited it is very interesting too. I like the textures in the sand and the angle of the pier.   Posted: 01/09/2022 11:33:00

Yes - agreed the lost colors take something away. Thanks for your comments.   Posted: 01/10/2022 13:47:19

Hey Jeff, welcome to the group. I like both your submitted image and the one you redid above. The thing that impresses me the most is the sharpness. you can never go wrong with the sun behind a pier. Welcome again.   Posted: 01/13/2022 12:07:43

Hi Jeff, welcome to the group. Until I read your explanation I hadn't realized that the birds were put in afterwards - super job. I'd agree with the crop of the foreground slightly and love the detail that you have in the waves and the pier. Cracking shot and conversion.

Hi Trevor

I had one shot with the birds and another from that shoot with the light under the pier, so I blended in the birds. Nice little feature in photoshop. Thanks for your comments. Jeff   Posted: 01/14/2022 19:41:33
