About the Image(s)

Canon R6, 100-400mm, f5.6, 1/2500s., ISO 800. B&W conversion in Lightroom using Adobe presets, then adjusted slightly for personal preference.
While I like the colors of the giraffe against the pale blue sky in the color version, I thought the patterns of the giraffe would make a nice conversion to B&W. Many wildlife images are in color, so doing a black and white conversion I think adds a bit of interest to an otherwise simple portrait.

This is a terrific profile portrait of the giraffe. The framing is effective, leaving room on the left, toward which the subject is facing. I like the strong diagonal, also.
I thought the lower part of the next was a little soft, so applied Photoshop > filter> Sharpen > Smart Sharpen. I intended to mask out that sharpening for the rest of the giraffe, but was happily surprised at the positive effect on the upper neck, the mane, and especially on the eye. Give it a try. Applying PS Select Subject before sharpening makes sure the BG bokeh does not get messed with. Similar treatment options available in Lightroom.

Thanks for the sharpening tip! The nose was probably a little bit soft due to the aperture I used and the distance to the giraffe, but I'll play around as you suggested!   Posted: 01/03/2022 16:32:21

I love the level of detail in your image to the hairs on the giraffes chin. The conversion to mono is superb- I would never have thought of it but it really brings out the marking of the giraffe. I love the diagonals too and the framing. Thanks for sharing   Posted: 01/03/2022 15:11:26

Thanks for your comment! One of my favorite photographers, Kristi Odom, often does wildlife in black and white, so that was a little bit of my inspiration to try it with this image.   Posted: 01/03/2022 16:33:13

I really like the BW over the color shot. Brings out the details and pops the markings against the background. Nice job.   Posted: 01/06/2022 16:38:35

A lovely animal portrait. I like the diagonal/triangle composition and the camera angle that makes the image interesting. The angle of light makes the texture pop. Well done, Tracy!   Posted: 01/09/2022 01:59:25

Hey Tracy, nice image and nice detail. The depth of field is perfect. The black and white works for me for the reasons you stated. I like it.   Posted: 01/13/2022 11:56:32

Hi Tracy,
I like the eye very much. She is speaking through her eye.
It is a good shot with incredible detail captured.
