Wheat Fields by Tom Barbernitz

May 2022 - Wheat Fields

About the Image(s)

Something different this month. Different varieties of lettuce planted in a field near Yuma Arizona. The symmetry of the lines and the stark contrast in colors is what caught my eye. Traveling without access to my computer - so full camera data is not available but believe it to be Canon 5dMkii, handheld, 70mm Lense.

Very unusual and different photo, but the lines and the variation in color draw your eye into the image and make me think about how many people these fields would feed. In this particular time of global issues it is soothing and calming that life indeed continues, regardless of all the other stressors. Calming image in that it is in a critical and yet mundane part of life. I like it more and more as I look at it.   Posted: 05/11/2022 11:34:36

Nice to see another image this month with leading lines :)

Beautiful contrast between the crops and the watering poles!

Curious question: Did the lines lead to a point (barn, into horizon, or something) that could be included in the frame, or was this an intentional choice?   Posted: 05/14/2022 19:38:13

Thanks for the comments. Just beyond the the end of the very slightly cropped image was an irrigation canal - Then a miscellaneous road with some vehicles. I cropped it down to the interesting bits I hope!

For what it's worth - I was told that the grocery store "Spring Mixes" were planted like this - because then they could pick it and pack it ready to go. Not sure if that was true or not - but almost sounds logical!   Posted: 05/15/2022 21:23:16

A fine image Tom, but like Dhananjay, I would love to see the far end. Even a road with traffic as you mention, could be used to give some human element to a farming location. Strong lines and colours, by all means.   Posted: 05/20/2022 04:28:42
