Sunset In Flight by Tom Barbernitz

January 2022 - Sunset In Flight

About the Image(s)

I was sitting on the edge of Lake Michigan trying to frame a picture that got the three ducks and sunset in an interesting composition - when a larger gull in flight provided the additional visual interest I was looking for. Shot at higher ISO and speed trying to get the inflight bird as sharp as possible.

Canon 5d II with EF28-70 at 70mm, ISO 800, 1/1600, F10 Edited in Lightroom primarily for straightening horizon, reducing highlights, and increasing contrast.

Welcome to DD 73 - Beautiful sunset and the gull adds to the composition. Just as you thought it would. I've never done sunset over a lake since I have lived near oceans most of my "photography life" but I would be hard pressed to recognize that as a lake had you not mentioned it. The reflection of the sun on the water draws you in nicely to the bird on the wing and that sky is beautiful. Clouds really do bring out the beauty of either sunrise or set.

Unfortunately in South Florida we don't get sunsets, only sunrises on the ocean. But I've found the Everglades substitute nicely.   Posted: 01/15/2022 12:22:23

Nice job Tom. Love the sunset and the birds for interest. Crop alittle from the bottom to get your horizon out of the center of the image. just a couple of inches below the ducks. makes a bigger impact with the sunset lower angle.   Posted: 01/15/2022 21:41:09

Thanks for the comments - have given it a shot and think I like it cropped as suggested. Tom   Posted: 01/19/2022 21:43:24

Congratulations on a superb image Tom. I love this art form of ours called photography, it's so subjective. The only important person to please is yourself. You have presented a very strong image to us as it is. But, my personal love of panoramas makes me agree with Debbie, cropping off to just below the ducks produces a great pano, not a better image, but certainly a different image. While that bottom left corner would be lost, I feel none of the story of this image would be lost.   Posted: 01/17/2022 03:22:02
