Dogwood Canyon by Debbie Bates

November 2021 - Dogwood Canyon

About the Image(s)

This image was taken last week in Dogwood Canyon, Missouri. It was a rainy misty day. I shot this at 1/125, 400 ISO, f5.6 with Nikon D7000. Wished I had my tripod with me to slow down the waterfall. But this was hand held. The rain helped to enhance the colors more.

Very nice and yes the rain added to the saturation of the colors - very nice. I would agree with the cloudy sky it would have been a great shot if it was taken at 1 second or so to show the silky water using a tripod.
For composition the waterfall appears to be vertically centered and it might have been better to take the shot with it maybe more to the right showing more of the pool around the right foreground rock.
I like the striations detail in the rock - very cool.   Posted: 11/09/2021 14:09:45

Indeed, saturated colors and also the texture of the rocks are the main strengths of the photo. Agree with Dave, the falls are right in the center, I would move it our slightly.   Posted: 11/10/2021 04:02:33

I am glad you did not slow down the waterfall. (A personal preference.) The focus is sharp, the composition is excellent. I like that the waterfall is just a bit off center and slightly diagonal from top to bottom. Sometimes a centered compsosition works just fine. The colors are perfect in the overcast, rainy day. I love this image.   Posted: 11/10/2021 05:03:43

I am not troubled at all about the position of the waterfall, mainly because of the slightly diagonal nature of the waterfall. I also feel the depth of the image because of the way the rocks in the front surround the waterfall. Love the beautiful water at the bottom also. I like the image very much! And while I love smooth water, usually, this one lends itself to keeping it moving with a faster shutter speed. Gives more texture to the water.   Posted: 11/12/2021 11:19:53

Beautiful capture. The composition, texture, and colors are excellent. The waterfall looks amazing without using slow shutter speed. I like the trees that surround the waterfall, and the texture of the rocks. Well done.   Posted: 11/23/2021 22:35:14

A great image Debbie. I'm not concerned about the centrality of the waterfall, this is a well-balanced vertical image. There are many rules in photography, but personally think they should be considered nothing more than guidelines and suggestions.   Posted: 11/27/2021 18:22:16
