Arches NAtional Park by Dave Ficke

October 2021 - Arches NAtional Park

About the Image(s)

Nikon D810, with a 17-35mm lens at 30mm, ISO 200 at f5 and using a tripod.

I was out to this area earlier in the day and saw that the sun would be setting behind the rock giving a lot of contrast. So I returned later that late afternoon and walked around for quite a bit looking for a spot to get bit the background rock formation with the closer ones all in the shot while giving the long

Post sharpened, white and balck balances, contrast and a tad of saturation and brought out the shadows

Beautiful photo. One of my personal favorite parks. I love the complementary colors of the blue sky and the colored rocks. I love the clouds in the sky; the formation forms leading ines right into the center of the scene. Just enough sunlight and shadows on the rocks to give depth to the scene and add interest. The shadows in front of the rocks also form leading lines toward the lighted rock formations. Well done indeed!   Posted: 10/10/2021 17:54:02

I too love Arches and would certainly go back if we can ever travel again! this is a beautiful spot, though I can't quite place exactly where it is....but Red Rocks are one of my favorite landscape subjects. Beautiful sky and great leading lines. Carol hit the highlights particularly about the shadows giving it depth. Our country has some magnificent scenes for sure! AT first I thought you might want to trim off some of the sky, but as Carol mentions they pull you into the roskd, so I would leave it as is, and perhaps make a nice print out of it!   Posted: 10/11/2021 14:32:57

Thank you. This is another example of cropping to a format for a print and I personally thought the sky added to the expanse of the landscape.
I have almost exclusively gone to metal ( aluminum) prints with a satan finish - I think high gloss has to much reflection and takes away from the image.   Posted: 10/11/2021 15:10:43

Totally agree on the high gloss. I have also printed to canvas particularly landscapes and really like those as well.   Posted: 10/13/2021 15:31:26
