June 2021 - Eclipse

About the Image(s)

Something different from me this month, a Lunar Scape. Last week we all had the opportunity to see (and photograph) a blood moon. Down here the moon bled out at around 5pm while many of us were driving home from work. But I wanted to capture the eclipse itself, blood or no blood. This is one of many images taken through-out the eclipse, with various amounts of the moon's surface disappearing into shadow. My personal favourite image from the night was the very last one I got. The moon in that one is just the smallest sliver of light in a black image. I chose to submit this one here due to the larger amount of visible moon. If anyone should care to see the "other" image, jump into group 76.

Details are: Nikon D2X; Sigma 100-500 (at 500); ISO 640; F6.3; 1/800 and tripod mounted. Processing - just minor tonal adjustments and some cropping.

Ok, so I love this one as well as your image on Group 76. Hard to say which pone I like more, but both of them are pretty special. I like that this one clearly identifies it as a lunar eclipse vs a new moon and it is still very subtle. If you print them yourself and see which one looks better in print might be the way to go and use the other one as a Home Screen. I can definitively say these are well done!   Posted: 06/10/2021 12:56:38

I like the minimalistic aspect of the image. The visible moon is in sharp focus and the softness of the demarcation between visible moon and not visible moon is quite interesting. Is this was indicates it is an eclipse rather than a normal new moon?   Posted: 06/10/2021 13:46:32

Ian, Interesting photo. I havent tried to do any eclipse. So I am interested in seeing what everyone does. I wish the image was just a hint brighter to make it stand out a little more.Still an awesome sight. Great job.   Posted: 06/10/2021 18:42:20

I am also an "eclipse man", I try to catch all solar and lunar eclipses. Recently we had a solar one, but only a few percent was visible from Hungary. Not easy to catch the moon, I have 600 mm lens but still missing the details I see on others photos.
Good job   Posted: 06/15/2021 07:42:05
