Blanchard Springs, Mountain View, Arkansas by Debbie Bates

About the Image(s)

This was taken just a few weeks ago. One of those that was a little hard to catch because of the shadows and sunlight. The springs are located inside area that has been carved out by the water, but the sunlight catches the water running away because of the trees have not leafed out. I decided to try several ways, but it seemed to work the best under exposing it and post processing it to bring it out of the shadows. Its a beautful spot and easy to hike to. Shot with Nikon D7000, ISO 100,1/100 sec. f/5.6 18mm.

Just wanted to say thank you to all those who comment on my images. I am still trying to learn how to write my comments for your images. You all seem to write exactly what I want to say, but I dont want to keep repeating what everyone else says. Im learning from all of you. Thank you.

Wow, 6 on 6. This month all of us posted landscapest with water :) and how nice it is to see how different the water in the photos are. In your photo I can feel the power of the water.
what I would try in a different way, is the crop. Your photo is squareish, while I prefer a landscape ratio. But this might be only my view.

This is my original crop, I had entered it earlier in our own council competition and was told that the tree distracts. Thats why I went with the square.
Thank you for your opinion. Its always great to hear what others think.   Posted: 05/20/2021 18:05:22

I love the way you have controlled the light in what I think would be a very contrasty location. We can't see the top of the walls, and that doesn't matter, but the shadows are telling me that the sun is somewhere around 30 to 45 degrees. A great warmth to the image. That water will bring out just how subjective our craft of photography is. Some people will say they like frozen or static water, while others will prefer it be flow and appear moving. Me, I prefer to look at each image on it's own merits. While my preference for shooting water is around half a second or so, with this particular image, your use of 1/100 definitely does not detract from the image. Very well done indeed.   Posted: 05/13/2021 08:41:06

Thank you Ian. will try some different settings the next time I do a waterfall. I love them so I always want to try different things.   Posted: 05/20/2021 18:07:18

Water certainly is our theme for the month! I'm a smooth water person when I am shooting waterfalls and beaches, but that is when I shoot, doesn't mean I can't appreciate someone else's view. The crispness of this image is great and maintaining the balanced lighting took some work. I love the character of the rocks with all the detail. And that light at the front pulls you right into the falls. Nice job!   Posted: 05/14/2021 11:02:30

I like the shot - the light is well controlled. I might have opened up the shadows a bit to have a deeper look in the cave where the water is coming out of.
The water - kind of interesting - when I take water shots I tend to go towards the dreamy silky water shots - now my wife, shall we say is not crazy about those kinds of shots - she says they look fake. So it is your call, but next tome our out and there is no direct sunlight on the water try taking a longer exposure of the water just to have the idea of how it is done -

Critiquing - Don't beat yourself up on this. It takes time and practice and not that I have got it down myself. I first look to see the entire photo, then start looking to see if it is sharp, then look for composition and exposure. Then go back to look at the story - artistic and point out some of the good points and limit any suggestions to one.
Hope that helps.   Posted: 05/26/2021 12:01:24
