October 2024 - Captiva Sunrise 2022

About the Image(s)

Sanibel/Captiva are two small island off the western coast of Florida that had significant damage from Hurricane Ian 2 years ago. The entire area has not completely recovered from Ian and was hit last week by Helene with severe flooding and now it looks like yet another Hurricane will inflict damage on that idyllic spot, how much is yet to be determined since as I write this they are not sure exactly where on the west coast it will come in. Regardless they will have impact, the question is how extensive, depending on where it comes on land. I find it hard to believe that people are not convinced we have global warming!

This image was taken as one of the fishing rigs left for a leisure morning of fishing in 2022. One month later the islands (and Fort Meyers) were inundated with water from Ian. I write this with sadness since this was our favorite spot for family vacations. We have been back once since then, on New Year's eve last year and planned to go again this year over Christmas. That is not likely to happen now. We will also be in the crosshairs ....but the impact should not be as severe since there is more land to transverse which lessens it power....unless it changes course yet again.

Just a beautiful and classic sunset image - just beautiful as is. That said, in my VF I wanted to emphasize the beauty even more so lightened the foreground slightly, cropped down to a pano to keep the most interesting pretty part of the sky, increased the exposure on the boat, punched up the sky (and reflection in the water) and added a slight vignette to draw the viewer into what I feel is the most interesting part of the image - the sky/boat/sky-tinted water reflection.   Posted: 10/09/2024 15:57:48

Butch,

Can you tell me what you did to increase the colors in the sky? Saturation of the pinkish color? I very much like that effect but not sure what you used. I've tried several things and nothing gave me the tones you achieved. I normally do most of my color modifications in LR not RAW but thought they were pretty much identical. Im trying to keep my mind off the weather and since I still have power..... thanks!   Posted: 10/09/2024 20:19:51

Sherry - I don't have a formula for anything, I really don't, I just go by the seat of my pants most of the time - but if I recall, I took your image into Color Efex Pro and used tonal contrast and the skylight filter   Posted: 10/09/2024 22:18:36

This is a great image Sherry. Time of day and your composition really suit this scene. It does also work well as a pano emphasizing the clouds more. And your inclusion of the boat adds a good story to this one.   Posted: 10/11/2024 22:28:27

Hi Sherry, I like the composition with the foreground and shoreline. I also thought the sky could be a bit more saturated, but your post looks very good. I like the fishing boat as it adds some perspective and fills a bit of that large open space.   Posted: 10/26/2024 17:44:56

Beautiful sunset colors. The sky and clouds are filled with soft pink and purple hues that create a calming atmosphere. The fishing boat also adds a peaceful scene. Beautiful capture.   Posted: 10/29/2024 06:26:46
