About the Image(s)

This image was taken in the Caribbean in 2015. It is a very dramatic creature, the Redlionfish. The dorsal fins can dispense a strong nerve poison so it is appreciated at a distance. One of the challenges in underwater photography is trying to add light to images. I was a bit further away from this creature so I had to do Post Processing to restore the colors as I saw them.

It was taken with a Canon G7 in an Ikelite housing. Aperture f/2.8

Hey Mary, What a great experience it must be to be underwater and see the other world that exists there. My ears do not allow me to be under water so will never experience this. I tried to eliminate some of the negative space at the top of the image and still include the interesting tubes. Just a thought. Bruce   Posted: 08/02/2022 10:07:53

Mary, underwater photography is a complete different ball game and takes physical condition, skills, not to mention expensive accessories for your camera and to be able to inhale and exhale. I know that the deeper you are, you loose colors specially the red, and everything turns into shades of blue. Obviously, you were able to illuminate somehow the lion fish which is an invasive species here in south Florida, but got improved in your PP. I like Bruce's crop. The image is sharp and nicely composed   Posted: 08/04/2022 18:03:55

I was able to stay within the range of my strobe so I got enough color to know what to enhance. My underwater photography is gentle diving. I never enter the water with a strong current (no photography possible in current). Like most skills, diving becomes easier and more comfortable with time. While I wouldn't recommend starting in the elderly years, it is quite a suitable late-life hobby for an experienced diver.   Posted: 08/04/2022 19:57:10

Mary, I continue to be impressed by your amazing underwater photography adventures. The creatures you have encountered are simply stunning! Your post processing effectively enhanced the underwater colors and the beauty of the lion fish. I am leaning towards the square crop that Bruce made so that the viewer can stay focused on the main subject. Nicely done!   Posted: 08/05/2022 12:31:07

Shooting through water is a challenge especially if you're further away from your subject and in this case keeping your distance was a good idea. The colors are beautiful and you did a great job with post processing. I actually like the crop as is. Great photo, Mary.   Posted: 08/07/2022 13:51:39
