About the Image(s)

This Anemone is just one of the multiple varieties existing at the Monterey Bay Aquarium in California. The Aquarium was opened in 1984 on the same site of a former sardine cannery on Cannery Row. It is one of the most complete aquariums in the USA, and the first one to exhibit a living kelp forest (Original 2)
The image was created with the iPhone 13 Max and with these settings: ISO 250, 63 mm f/1.5 and 1/60 sec.
The image was just cropped and using the masking brush in ACR the periphery was slightly darkened to make the anemone stand out

Isaac, What a beautiful image you captured with your iPhone! The square cropping effectively allows the viewer to concentrate on the anemone. You have captured the details of the inside of the anemone well.   Posted: 05/11/2022 08:11:42

I'm always impressed with the cameras in the newer phones and this was nicely done. It was a good idea to add a vignette and the square crop makes it stand out. The source of the light makes the anemone look harsh to me. There's great detail but I'm wondering if the clarity was brought down or a glow was added, it would soften the light and make the image more dreamy.

Lovely Isaac. We always have a camera with us now! A square crop works very well and I like the treatment you have done on the colourful surrounding plants: they don't detract now.

I have started using Portrait mode where the phone allows re the distance of the subject as this gives DOF control as well as the generally available exposure compensation adjustments etc.   Posted: 05/12/2022 11:23:17

Isaac, I had a wonderful visit to the Monterey Bay Aquarium many years ago. It resulted in the only picture in my Coral Reef Show which was taken in an Aquarium! That aquarium does a great job of keeping all surfaces black so it is possible to isolate a creature. This is a beautiful image.

For fun, I will add my jellyfish image created at the Monterey Bay Aquarium.   Posted: 05/12/2022 12:57:58

I first visited the Monterrey Aquarium in the 90s... It was wonderful then. My young boys really enjoyed. Its been about a dozen years since I last visited. About a dozen years ago I had a number of my own salt water aquariums. Talk about a hobby with a lot of work and cost! The white balance was always a challenge while photographing. This photo is another one where a tighter crop might just be the ticket. Did you use flash? or was this part of the tank lights?   Posted: 05/12/2022 15:30:44

I was impressed with the light provided. It was directional and gave excellent illumination to the creatures.   Posted: 05/12/2022 17:28:22
